Sports Barons bury Bulls Melanie Knox wins in exhibition tune-up school track meet MELANIE KNOX Melanie Knox, RR 1, Blyth, who earlier represented the Blyth Legion at a Regional Legion track meet in Kitchener in July and a provincial championship in July, showed herformby winning the Grade 9 track meet at Central Huron Secondary School recently. Melanie led all girls in the competition with26 points. The grade 9 track meet is designed to identify those incoming students at the school who show athletic promise. Melanie took second place in the high jump with a jump of 1.42 metres and third in the 100 metre race with a time of 15.15 seconds. She won the long ju mp competition with a jump of 4.42 metres, a full third of a metre better than the second place finisher. She had won the long jump at the Legion’s regional meet in Kitchener and placed ninth in the all-Ontario meet. Tammi Medd of Blyth was also a winner in the meet, taking the 800 metre race in a time of 2:56.5. On the boys side of the meet, Mark Bylsma of RR 1, Blyth, took third in the high jump with 1.45 metres and second in the 800 metre with a time of 2:36.7. The Hanover Barons showed why they are contenders for the All-Ontario Jr. C. championship Sunday in Ayton as they skated to an easy 10-0 rout of the Brussels Jr. D. Bulls. Blessed with an excep tionally balanced line-up, 15 of the 18 Hanover skaters registered a point with seven different goal scorers. John Steffler played an out standing opening 20 minutes of goal for the Bulls, holding Hanover to one goal on 20 shots. Steffler continued to display his “Midas Touch’’ in the second period allowing only a powerplay marker before giving way to Jeff McGavin at the midway point of the game. Unfortunately for Jeff, the roof caved in, or the wheels fell off, or both, as the Barons scored five goals to take a 7-0 lead to the dressing room after 40 minutes and added three more in the third for the win, outshooting Brussels 48-19. A tip-of-the-hat goes out to the line of Sean Kieffer, Paul Coultes and Bruce Johnston for being the only three players not to have a goal scored against them. Off-ice happenings include the signing of approximately 20 play ers by Coach Steve Coulter, as well as the affiliation of the Bulls with the Listowel Cyclones of the midwestern Jr. B. loop for the 1988-89 season. The Bulls open their regular schedule this Friday night in Mitchell at 8:30. Everyone is welcome.
