Bantams sweep WOAA championship Brussels Bantam boys scored an extra inning victory to sweep the championship series against Allenford and claim the Western Ontario Athletic Association Bant­ am championship Wednesday Brussels Bantams won the WOAA Bantam championship in a come-from-behind win over Allenford Wednesday night. Both teams posted goose-eggs on the scoreboard for the next two innings before Allenford took the lead in the sixth. Brussels trailed 4-3 going into its lastbatbutToddRiceledoff the inning with a walk then Greg Mulvey doubled to the fence to score Todd. Scott Bremner sin­ gled, sending Greg Mulvey to third, then proceeded to steal second base to put runners on second and third. Scott Johnston then grounded back to the mound with Alienford’s pitcher throwing him out at first then the first baseman getting the ball back to the catcher in time to tag out Greg Mulvey at the plate to end the inning. Brussels managed to hold off Allenford in the bottom of the seventh so the game went to extra innings. In the eighth, Brian Alexander and Jason Gropp hit singles, then Neil Pipe bunted his way on base to load the bases. Shawn Jacklin tapped back to the pitcher for a force-out at home on Brian Alexander. Andrew McCutcheon hit a hard groundball to the infield and Allenford could only take the out on Neil Pipe at second, allowing Jason Gropp to score. In the bottom of the inning Andrew McCutcheon shut out Allenford to seal the victory. After taking over from Scott Johnston in the fourth, he recorded seven strikeouts the rest of the way. Scott had four strikeouts in his three innings. Bulls post first exhibition win Blyth hockey school starts next week The Blyth Community Hockey School will begin at the Blyth arena on Monday, Oct. 3 and run every day until Saturday, Oct. 8. Players have been divided into three separate divisions depending on their age, ability and size. The groups run from 5:00 - 6:00, 6:15 - 7:15, and 7:30 to 8:30. Instructors Leadership program planned Are you interested in developing your leadership skills to service the agricultural community? Organizers of the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (AALP) are looking for men and women with leadership potential and a commitment to agriculture. Thirty such individuals will be selected from across Ontario as the next group of AALP participants. They will begin the program in April 1989. Deadline for application is De­ cember 15, 1988. Application forms will be available at an AALP Information Meeting, Wednes­ day, October 26, at the Clinton Town Hall at 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. AALP is a two-year program designed for individuals in the early stages of a leadership career, for this school are Doug Neil and Larry Lane from Wingham. Both men hold their Level 5 Coaches Certificate. There are still openings in all three divisions for players. A four-point performance by the Bulls’ Ron Strome led Brussels to their first victory of the pre-season, a 6-4 win over Seaforth Sunday afternoon. KevinTalsma’s point shot assis­ ted by Nigel Taylor and Bill Kinahan followed by a Ron Strome goal from Brian Campbell quickly gave the Bulls an early lead. However, Seaforth regrouped and rallied to tie the score at the end of 20 minutes. A powerplay effort by Marty Rutledge from Strome and Camp­ bell with three minutes remaining in the second period returned the lead to the Bulls. Strome’s second of the day a minute later from Kinahan gave the Bulls a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. Seaforth opened the scoring early in the third, but Rutledge’s second from Talsma and Jason Coulter, followed by a Kinahan score from Strome gave the Bulls a comfortable three-goal lead. Sea­ forth scored on the powerplay late in the game to end the scoring summary. A strong performance was given by the Strome-Campbell-Kinahan line as they combined for a nine-point game. As well Jeff McGavin and Murray Townsend gave the Bulls solid goaltending, especially McGavin who gave the Juniors the spark they needed with some excellent saves early in the game. The Bulls will be travelling to .Ayton on Sunday for a rematch with the Hanover Jr. C. Barons.
