Mercey Brothersplay Memorial Hall Oct 15 The Mercey Brothers, one of Canada’s top country and western music acts will perform in concert at Blyth Memorial Hall October 15. The group which has performed not only across Canada but at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville as well as in Holland and Scandanavia will appear as the first event in the Blyth Festival’s Fall and Spring entertainment series. Born in Hanover, Larry and Lloyd Mercey now make their home in Elmira. Their four-piece band, including Eric Mahar and John Dymond has won such awards as Top Country Group in the Juno Awards, Canadian Coun­ try Music Awards and RPM’s Big Country Awards awards. Their last six singles have been top 10 hits on the national country charts in the past three years. The Mercey Brothers, have been an integral part of Canada’s country music scene for almost 25 years. With 13 albums to their credit, numerous hit singles, a record label, two publishing hous­ es and a company specializing in the makingofcustomjinglesfor radio and television, they have achieved an incredible record of success. Their latest albums re­ leased on their own MBS label include “The Mercey Brothers, Latest & Greatest” and “Love Is The Reason’’. Larry Mercey, a founding member of the band, began his musical career at the age of 15, making his television debut with the CKNX Barn Dance. Brother Lloyd began as a member of The Mercey Brothers in 1965 after several years of dedicated practising and playing with a local band. Now, many years later, an integral part of the group, he not only contributes his distinctive drum style but balances business end of things. The other events in the Blyth Family Festival of Entertaiment, four-part series include: “Wing­ field’s Progress,’’ starring Rod Beattie (Saturday, November 12/ 88at8p.m.), “The Great Lakes Quintet’’ (Sunday, April 16/89 at2 p.m.)and “Beth AnneCole Sings” - a musical evening of laughter (Saturday, May6/89at8p.m.). All four performances for only $30 for adults and $20 for Youth (18 and under) at Blyth Memorial Hall throughouttheFalland Spring. Bothjudgesfor the Step- Dancing competition, Kim (Craig) Hornyak of Lucan and Norm Irving of Brunner judged in Blyth for the first time, although both have themselves won at competitions all over southwestern Ontario and into the eastern part of the province; while Fiddle Contest judge Reg Freer is also new to Blyth, while his co-judge, Karl McNaughton of Lucan, was back for his second year. “We try not to have any one judge back for more than two years in a row,” Mrs. Van Egmond said, “And it is hard to find new judges qualified for the level of competi­ tion our show attracts.” There were more than 50 fiddlers of all ages signed up for the Fiddler’s Jamboree on the first Friday evening of the Reunion, Mrs. Van Egmond said, while 30 fiddlers took part in Saturday’s competition, and 33 step-dancers competed on Sunday.
