Bly th refuses to get caught in sign war The battle of the signs at the main street municipal parking lot continued Thursday night when Blyth Supermarket owner Al Willie appeared before Blyth village council to ask for permission to erect a sign advertising his store on the lot. It was the second month in a row Mr. Willie had appeared before council unhappy with the impres sion left by a sign for Scrimgeour’s Food Market at the edge of the parking lot that the parking lot belonged to that store. Council had agreed at its August meeting to erect signs to mark the lot as a municipal parking lot but Mr. Willie was unhappy with the green “P” parking lot signs erected, saying some of his customers still Brian Westburg is the winner of the September draw of Blyth Minor Ball fundraising events. He re ceives a$100 certificate from Sears from Lloyd Tasker. Relay run to carry IPM flag A relay run, with the Huron- Perth R.C.S.S. and the Perth County Board of Education, will commence from Dublin and go to the site of the 1988 International Plowing Match and Farm Machin ery Show. Each school in Perth County has selected one runner from Grade 5 up to represent that school on the run. This event goes rain or shine. The event starts at the Huron- Perth R.C.S.S. Board office in Dublin, proceeds north on County Road #10, then east on County Road #11 through Brodhagen and Bornholm, then south on County Road #12 through Wartburg east on Highway #8 through Sebring- ville, then south on County Road #19, then east on Concession 2-3 DownieTownship, thenintothe match site. The distance is approx imately 45 km. Eachathletewillrunone kilo meter at a time. Three runners carrying flags will run the initial kilometerthroughthevillage of Dublin. Then runners will run a kilometer each carrying a flag. Three runners will again be used during the run through Sebring- ville. Individual runners will run the leg south on County Road #19 to the Match site. A support runner will be encouraged to run along with an individual runner. At the Match site, all the runners will follow the flag procession in to the opening ceremonies. thought the lot belonged to his competitor. Councillor Lloyd Sippel said the' standard sign is recognized as marking municipal parking lots. After some more discussion on the suitability and placement of the parking signs Mr. Willie suggest ed “let’s cut the guff and give me permission to put up a sign (on the parking lot)’’. Reeve Albert Wasson said Mr. Willie could apply to have his sign put up on the lot beside Scrim geour’s sign but “I don’t see us very interested in that situation”. Councillor Bill Manning sugges ted Mr. Willie was “playing games” with council. “You object to Don Scrimgeour’s sign and that’s about ail it boils down to.” Mr. Willie said he wasn’t just against his competitor’s sign but would like to see one sign mounted on the parking lot on which both stores, and any other store wishing to pay a share of the costs, could advertise. Hepointedtosimilar signs at shopping malls. Councillor Bill Howson said he would like to have a look at the site before he made up his mind. He said he was not about to commit himself that night on adding more signs to the lot. Councillor Manning said the issue was obviously not just a matter of identifying the parking lot as a municipal lot and “I don’t think the village is interested in guaranteeing advertising”. Per haps, he said, the village council had made a mistake in giving permission for the present sign in the first place but it shouldn’t compound the problem with more signs. Council discussed the situation later in the meeting with Councillor Manning making a motion that was passed, leaving the situation as it currently is. Council will investi gate to see if flower boxes in the area can be moved to make the “P” parking lot signs more easily visible. Directory VICTORIA CUSTOM CABINETS Traditional & European Styles.
