Welcome to Blyth BLYTH GENERAL Rick Elliott 519'523-9725 don’t stick together so much. There have been terrible changes in rural communities, he says. Leadingtheway are the majestic steam Continued from page 6 continued to thresh until 1971 and had one of the last threshing operations in the area. After that they switched to using a combine for another seven years. There were some advantages and some disadvan tages to the combine. The threshing machine had a straw cutter that gave better quality straw whilewiththe combine the straw had to be baled and drawn in. The combine however allowed farmers to be more independent, not having to work together in gangs to get work done. Two independent, he says now, because farmers engines, chugging and clanking and now and then letting go an ear-splitting blast from their steam whistles. He still keeps one horse that’s ‘ ‘just a big pet’ ’ with the idea he can use him to pull his car out if it gets struck in the winter. Until recent years he took delight in getting a team out and doing some plowing. “I miss them” he says of his team. But he doesn’t downgrade the tractors that came to replace them. You can always sit on the seat and watch the wheels go round but you can’t follow horses like you can when you’re young, he says. George is the third generation of his family to farm the Carlow farm with its impressive, two-storey brick home, overhang-barn and an old silo made of glazed brown brick. He raised pigs and cattle when he was more active, now rents some of the land out, pastures cattle for others and keeps a few cattle himself. He keeps busy keeping the farm in good shape, taking time to paint barn windows this day. He plans on being at the Thresher Reunion as usual this year, renewing acquaintances with the old machines and the people who run them. ‘‘I haven’t missed one in 27,” he says. News item: Mr. Duncan, of the Blyth foundry, has invented and patented a new rotary steam engine which he expects will revolutionize the steam engine business. Huron Expositor, Feb. 4,1881.
