Friday is a special day in that senior citizens and handicapped people can enter for only $1 instead of the normal $3 admission. It’s a good day for them to get around because things generally aren’t as crowded as the Saturday and Sunday shows. There’s plenty to do and see, however. Marie Flynn and the Huron Strings will entertain along with other variety entertain ment from 1 - 4 p.m. on stage. The craft area will be open in the arena and of course the steam engines will be chugging and the displays of all the old pioneer equipment will be out. At 4:30 the parade of engines will take place as it will every day during the event. Friday night all the old time fiddlers will be putting resin on their bows and dusting off the old tunes at the Old Time Fiddlers’ Jamboree. Johnny Brent, famous from CK.NX Barn Dance days, will be master of ceremonies for the event. It’s a very open event with anyone who can fiddle being able to play just by registering at the door. Admission to the arena auditorium for this evening is $3. Things get underway early Saturday with the grounds open at 9 a.m. to view the various displays. The official opening takes place at 1 p.m. but other events have begun by that time. The Heritage Fiddlers will entertain on stage in front of the arena while elsewhere at the north side of the arena, the fiddlers contest will begin at 2 p.m. Gladys Van Egmond of Clinton is in charge of the competitions with Johnny Brent as master of ceremonies. There are hot meals available from 11a.m. to 7 p.m. upstairs in the arena auditorium which this year is accessible to handicapped persons as well with a new lift installed in the past year. There are contests throughout the afternoon that make use of old skills: log sawing, belt-tightening (as opposed to belt-loosening for the meals in the arena) and bag tying. Competitions take place in these events both Saturday and Sunday. Stepdancing takes the spotlight Sunday as dancers of all ages strut their stuff beginning at 2 p. m. The fascination of the big sawmill will draw spectators as usual as will the shingle mill and the many steam-driven models. The bean pot will be on and cider available. Periodically during the afternoon the big engines will be hooked to the threshing machines and demonstrations of how threshing used to be done will take place. When the activities of the afternoon wind down after the parade, fiddlers will gather for an old time jam session from 6 - 9 p. m. The evening will be topped off with a dance in the arena from 9 -1 to the music of the Heritage Fiddlers. Sunday will begin early. Of course many people will journey downtown both Saturday and Sunday mornings for the Blyth Firemen’s Pancake Breakfast. An interdenominational church service will be held at the main stage at the fairgrounds at 10:30 on Sunday. Stepdancing is the featured competition on Sunday as the young steppers from around the area compete for prizes for single and groups all beginning at 2 p.m. The Mount Forest Cameron Highlanders will bring the sound of the pipes and drums to the grounds throughout the afternoon. And of course all the other activities throughout the grounds will be going full tilt from the crafts displays to the hissing and popping of the gas pumps. The afternoon will culminate with the parade at 4:30 with prizes being awarded for the top engines and tractors.
