It's illegal to sell cigarettes to kids
If you ’ re a parent who sends your
children to buy cigarettes, you will
soon find that store owners won’t
sell tobacco products to children
under 18 without a written note.
In Ontario, it’s illegal to sell
tobacco products to persons under
the age of 18. In the rest of Canada
it’s illegal to sell tobacco products
to people under the age of 16.
But the law is not widely known,
says A lasdair McKie han, presi
dent of Retail Council of Canada.
That’s why Retail Council has
launched, starting in Ontario, a
Canada-wide program to inform
retails, their employees and cust
omers that it’s illegal to sell
tobacco products to minors.
“Itisafactthatthelawis not
widely known, nor is it enforced in
any consistent way. For that reason
we have prepared an information
program to communicate the facts
about the law and to encourage
retailers and customers to obey
it,’’ McKichan said.
Along with Retail Council of
Canada, the program is also
sponsored by the Canadian Coun
cil of Grocery Distributors, the
Cnaadian Federation of Indepen
dent Grocers, the National Asso
ciation of Tobacco and Confectio
nery Distributors and the Cana
dian Automoatic Merchandising
Association in cooperation with the
Canadian Tobacco Manufacturer’ s
Council.
Information kits whibh include
decals, and a brochure have been
distributed to38,000 retail outlets
across Ontario. They are meant to
inform both retailersand thepublic
of the law. The decals feature a
6igarette package logo with a red
“ban’’ symbol through the words
“under 18’s” to remind customers
of the law. Others say “Remember
it is illegal to sell cigarettes to
under 18’s’’ to remind sales staff of
the law.
The decals can be placed on store
windows, glass doors, cash regi
sters, cigarette racks and vending
machines.
The information kits featuring
decals that say “under 16”, in
conformity with the applicable
federal law, will be distributed to
the other provinces in August and
September.,
