Library video prepares kids to face dangers It seems that we read and hear about cases of the sexual abuse of children almost every day in the newspapers or on television. The statistics we hear quoted are frightening: Two out of three femaleswillbethe victims of an unwanted sexual act and one out of every three males; in 80 per cent of the time, the assault will occur before the person has reached the age of 21. Nearly one quarter of assaults or attempted assaults on female victims occur before the child has reached the age of 11. Over 80 per cent of the abusers are persons known to the child. As concerned parents, many of us want to educate our children about the dangers of sexual assault toensure they won’t become one of these statistics. But how do we go about it? How do we teach young children sensible guidelines that they can understand and use? You can find help with these serious questions at your local branch of the Huron County Library. A National Film Board video program on the prevention of child sexual abuse called, “Feel ing Yes, Feeling No: a Family Program”, isnow available ata library near you. Section one of this video is for parents or teachers and other professionals. It clarifies the na ture and scope of child sexual assault and explains the aims and methods of the program. A booklet accompanies the video, outlining ways to recognize a sexually abused child and what to do if your child tells you she or he has been assaulted. Additional information published by Health and Welfare Canada is included with the video package. The Children’s section of the video is aimed at children aged 6 - 12. It is divided into three, clearly separated, 15 minute presenta tions. Each part builds on and reinforces the information and skills learned in the previous part. Through the use of lively music and skillful actors, the children’s section teaches skills based on sound principles of developmental psychology. The video is intended to be viewed by children in the company of a supportive parent or teacher who will reinforce the videos positive message. The first 15 minute segment teaches children basic skills that build self-worth and good judge ment - the necessary foundation for self-protection. They also learn to appreciate and take responsibility for their own bodies. In the second presentation, the understanding of “yes” and “no” feelings is deepened through memorable skits and the children are taught how to recognize sexual assault by strangers. Children also learn the three questions they can ask, themselves, toensure their safety, before they respond to a stranger’s request. Part three discusses the subject of sexual assault by family mem bers or other trusted persons. Actors role-play children’s re sponses to several common family- member assault situations and children offer self-help sugges tions. The home use video format allows parents topreview the video before watching it with their children. The parent can choose a quiet time when the whole family can watch and discuss the informa tion together. The parent can also stop the tape or repeat segments as needed. The video format provides Advertising is a guide to fashion. the parent with flexibility in presentation. “Feeling Yes, Feeling No” has been presented to all Canadian public libraries by the Canadian Library Association with the sup port of Health and Welfare Cana da.
