Burnout may be experienced by a farm partner adding an off-farm job tofarm work and family responsibilities or by a farmer who is working very hard, feeling discouraged and worrying about paying the note at the bank. Burnout is a serious human problem that progressively affects the whole person. It affects a person’s intellect, feelings, rela tionships and spirit. Common symptoms include physical and emotional fatigue, irritability, cynicism, depression, physical ailments and negative attitudes about people, work, oneself and life in general. There is no quick and easy cure for burnout. Each of us must take responsibility for our own life. Firstly we mustunderstand and accept our own limits. It becomes important to stop short rather than always pushing beyond our limits. Setting realistic goals is difficult but essential in a burnout situa tion. Learning to limit our work objectives and being satisfied with our accomplishments is a major step. It becomes important to say no without feeling guilty when we are too exhausted to volunteer at another community project. Learn to unwind whether through physi cal exercise or other enjoyable activities. Determine what is important to you in your work and your personal life. Reward yourself when you have accomplished what you set out to do. Obituaries ROBERT EDWIN CRAIG Robert Edwin Craig of Ottawa passed away suddenly on August 20,1988.
