I have just--returned—from the
dentist and have been told in a
forceful manner that I.must spend at
least 10 minutes twice a day
cleaning my teeth and bossing my
gums. •
"If you don.'t, you' will be wearing
falsies before you retire," he said in
a weak attempt at a joke.
Not long--ago, had an annual
physical examination and learned
that the O'Keefe centre just above
my belt, was reaching worrisome
propOrtions. My doctor told me to
get more exercise, at least , 30
minutes a day.
Some years ago, a horse fell on my
right ankle and broke it in three
places. A metal pin holds one bone in
place. At that time, the specialist in
the case suggested that I should
spend at least 10 minutes a day
exercising that, ankle.
I have mentioned before that my
wife and I feel that an attempt at
spirituality is necessary in this life.
We made a decision more than 10 •
years ago to spend at least half an
hour a day in a serious attempt at
meditation. We have kept that
promise.
Regular readers of this column
are also aware that we keep horses
around, our place. I love them. There
is 'something about the outside of a
horse that does wonders for the
inside 'of a man. It is one of the few .
pleasures I have in this vale of tears
and it takes me another half an hour
or so to feed my horses.
Now, I am a night person. I rarely
• function well until the sun is almost
over the yardarm. I get to bed about
midnight and arise groggily a few
minutes before. eight in the morning.
But 'I do find I need about eight hours
sleep every night.
I cannot function without that
' much sleep. - -
I also enjoy , eating, a habit I
picked up when very young and I
find it difficult to break. It takes me
half an hour for a hearty breakfast,
half an hour for a light lunch and
out-three-qtrart e r s-otan -hour-
leisurely dinner.
Writing, too, is something that
must be done on a regular basis or
rnsirdust-and-deca-Y-setin..-An-hour•a—•
day is necessary to keep from
getting rusty.
In this country, one must 'be
gainfully employed. So, -at least
seven hours a day are spent on the
job. Because we choose to live in the
country, I spend one hour and 10'
minutes, every day, driving to and
from-work.- -• -----
Well, what you may ask, is . the
purpose • of all this? A moment, •
please !
I am losing hair at a great rate and
have just been informed by a hair
specialist that I will have to spend
another 10'minutes a day in hair
care unless I want to lose the rest of
it,
Suppose, just suppose, I'needed
eye exercises or ear exercises.
Suppose I had a few more problems
with my health, as if I haven't
enough already. ,
As a journalist, I must read one or
two papers a day and, keep myself
posted, on world, federal, provincial
and local events.
Now, total it all.
I figure, if I follow the advice of
the doctors and the specialists and
the experts, I might 'have enough
time left to spend 10 minutes with
my daughter, 10• minutes with my
wife and a few seconds with my dog.
So I have decided to tell. all the
experts and the special1sts to go
suck eggs.
I may die a physical wreck but
who needs the body then? Who wants
to be the healthiest corpse in the
graveyard?
I would rather die a physical ,
wreck and spend more time with a
woman who has stuck with me
through thick and thin for more than
three decades and a daughter who is
More beautiful than 'a spring sunrise

mountain brook.
And a horse who flickers a
welcome every time I go to the barn.
And more time in prayer and
meditation, too.

welcomed by Him Who taught us all
to pray. I don't thInk He cares if my
teeth are my own.
