system next 'year. ,
The budget estimates total spending by
the authority in 1981 will be $667,480, more
than $125,000 above the 1980 bUdget.
However Most of this increase results, from
the $110,000 set aside for the Listowel
conduit special project.
In other budget” niCW-adniinistration
spending will be up $21,000 next year to
$169,550, most of the increase going, to
wages. There is a, .decrease.. of .$2,200 .,to
$246;300 in, the budget for the' water: and
related land manageMent program, and the
budget for conservation and recreation
programs 'is down by $7,000 to $$7,000.
Overall, Mrs. Shiell projected an increase
of about 711/2 per cent in general leVy to
be collected from municipalitiei in ..the
Maitland Valley watershed during 1981.
Members of the Maitland Valley , Con-
servation Authority voted approval of a
number of projects and studies to be
undertaken during the coming year at a
general Meeting held in. Brussels last week.
Listovvel, Lucknowand Fordwich will be
the prime beneficiaries from three ofthe

Channel improvements to the Listowel
Zonduit, which had been put on a back
burner for several years while the town
carried out the necessary replacement of two
highway bridges forming part of the conduit,

Doug Trench, the member from Listowel,
Presented a proposal that the conservation
authority undertake a phased program of
down stream channel improvements with a
total estimated costaof $435,000, phis.
.. .ngineering and supervisory fees.
The project would be spread over a
number of years and the cost would be split
35 - 15 between the Ministry of Natural
Resources and the town.
William Knowles, a member of the engin-
wring firm which designed the channel
improvements, said the intent is to double
the capacity of the conduit through Listowel,
bringing it up to the requirements .of
one-in-100 year storm.
The project will start with the downstream
improvements and work up, he'explained:
More than $1 million has been spent
already on - the bridges,' he said, which
represents about 35 per cent of the entire
program.
The authority has included S110,000 in its
ti preliminary 1981 budget for work on the
conduit, but Secretary-Treasurer Marlene
Shiell said :it now appears that will be low
and the MVCA will have to go back to the
rniniStry and ask for more money.
The cost of the first phase now is
estimated at more than $200,000.
However Mrs. Shiell noted that before the
authority can go any further it must receive a
formal commitment from Listewel that the
town will go ahead with the project. ,
"If we don't get that request in writing
(the project) won't go for 1981," she said,
adding that the authority is seeking 'a
commitment for the whole project rather
He asked that the MVCA' undertake the
study, with the authority share of the cost to
be raised by a special levy to the township.
Herb. Clark, the member, for Lucknow,
asked for an engineering • study on the
stream bank stabilization needed to correct
erosion and some downtown flooding in the
village.
The problein concerns the Nine Mile River
one block north and one block south of
Highway 86, he reported, and the village
council is asking for channel improvements
and a diking program immediately upstream
of the highway.
The authority agreed to undertake the
study, with its share of the cost to be raised
by special levy to Lucknow.
On Shousand dollars has been set aside in
the preliminary budget for the Fordwich
erosion study, and $2;500 has beeritartitark-

Luck now.
