-The South Kinloss Annual Picnic was quite an event,
in 1920. I went West shortly after this picnic and never
got back for another. We had enough young people to
choose up for two quite good ball teams.
I remember we chose up for four relay teams two
girls and two boys to run around the ball park. Four
girls ran first and each passed a wand to one of the boys
on the team who ran the next quarter. Girls ran the
third quarter and four boys ended the race.
Mattie (Martin) MacInnes, Rena Fraser, Irene Fraser
had won their relay that day. and I happened to have
had a snapshot. We were never together to run a relay .
race again.
Mattie went to Detroil shortly after and spent his life
railroading. :I believe Rena has died but I keep in touch,
with her brother, Clarence, who although blind, ;keeps
in touch with a large family and many friends. Irene is
one of the three youngest of the nine MacIntosh sisters'
who lived a mile and a quarter east of the Grey Ox
School. Although Donalda became a teacher and a
nurse and went to Taiwan as a missionary after
marrying Hugh MacMillan, all the girl's were outstand-
ing, and hopefully there will be a good, 'story of the
Macintosh family in the Grey Ox publication which is in
the making.

Dr. Anna Wright and Donald Nicolson
By Sandy Nicholson
In the summer of 1929, Marian and I were free from
work at the University of Edinburgh and as assistant
minister of St. Stephen's Church in July. Marian's
sister, Norma Massey and my sister, Anna came over
biboat and spent a month sharing the expenses with us
of a circle tour of England, Wales and Scotland.
We of course spent some time in the Isle of Skye. I
had been there in 1926, ,when ,I went over and back, free
of charge on .a cattle boat. I discovered two different
Nicolson families in the Portree area - except they
spelled the name without an H.
On my return home, my father told me that our name
should really be spelled without an H. He was eight
before the first school in the south part of Kinloss Was
open - one mile west of the Grey Ox School - built some
years later. Their first teacher told them that they were
in Canada, not Scotland, and the correct way to spell
the name was with the H, This annoyed my grand-
father, but pupils did not argue with teachers one
hundred years ago.
I find that Norman Nicolson signed his name quite
well. In the Kinloss Township papers before James
Somerville, he was a witness as several neighbours got
titles for their homesteads.
Sentinel readers who remember my father Alex
Nicholson, who died in 1930 and Uncle Malcolm, who
died in 1919, will remember that Donald Nicolson
besides Dr. Anna, looked more like Alex Nicholson than
did his brother.
To my right in the picture is John Lamont of Skye
who also had relatives who had gone to. America and
they had lost track of them. Is there a resemblance to
the father of Annie Ross Maclntyre?
