In a paper called Agriculture and Food
Strategy. For Ontario, the Ontario Federation
of Agriculture has made several recommen-
dations to the Ontario Government expres.
sing the need, for clearly stated compre-
hensive guidelines for the farming and food
processing industry in the province,,
The Federation wants govermtent pro-
grams and financing to promote Ontario
farm products in the areas of. production,
. marketing, processing, and distribution.
Half of the food imported into Canada, $2
billion worth, is food that could easily have
been grown and processed in Canada, but is
not. A committed 'strategy to promote
domestic production to replace imported
items is needed says the paper. Such a
strategy would mean -a billion dollar plus
boost to the provincial economy, greater
employment in many food processing and
related industries, a stable food supply
and prices to the consumer, and enhanced
revenues to the provincial treasury.
The Ontario Federation of Agriculture'
recommends in the paper, a special fund of
$150 million per year for the next 10 years be
established to support the programs requir-
ed by this strategy.
