"I want to emPhasize that the nursing department is making a 'substantial .contti- bupion to the deficit reduction through this change," . Mr. Hayes said the hospital ,had been- iosing about $3,000. to $4,000 Per Pay Oriod (every: two weeks) on the nursing budget. Since the change was made aliciutthe begin- ning of Seplember, it has stopped the lesses and begun gradually to recover theaCcum- ulated deficit on nursing, which last month amounted to about $35,000. NursineDirector William Womiley ex- plained the change in:scheduling gives the hospital more flexibility in matching 'the number of nurses on duty' to, the number of patients in the hospital. Under the .old system there were a lot of full-time nurses on duty during the week and part-tinie nurses, were used mostly on week- ends. That' meant pretty much the same number of nurses were, on duty every week, , whether or not hospital beds were full. The new schedule has more full-time" nurses working weekends, allowing for scheduling of more part-time nurseS on _weekdays, When there are fewerpatients in the hospital fewer part-time nurses are called in and this yields' a saving in PO. This type of scheduling is not unusual, Mr. Hayes reported.' In fact, more than 60 per, cent of hospitals use a schedule giving nurses one weekend off in every four. This 'provides even more flexibility, but he said he thinks this hospital can manage with the one in three schedule. He said the old schedule giving nurses every other weekend off was iptroduced about four years .ago! when the hospitar regularly returned ksurplus to the 'Health • Ministry, Since then provincial budget restraints have forced this and other liosprairtp tighterr. -their belts. "We were able to he a little more generous then, Mr.Hayes.commented, , "but we simply can't afford it anymore." The aririourement came. following a :meeting of the hPipital board last Wed- neSdaY night, much of which was cenducted in comniittee-of-the-Whole, In other business at the meeting, Mr. Hayes reported a motion was Passed inviting Ashfield Township Ito be, represented on the board of governors and granting it an insti- tutional membership. Ailifield currently is represented pii The board on a , pro tern basis by. Frank MacKenzie, who, also Tepresents Lucknow. West Wavvanosh • and Kinloss, Mr. Hayes Said no specific 'request for ..a , donation to the hospital by Aslifield was tied ' to the motion granting . membership. The whole matter will come up for review at the hospital association's annual meeting next year as part of a notice of motion proposing a redistributien 'of representation" on the board. , Prior to the start of their business meeting, hospital hoard members listened to a team froth University Hospital, LondOn, a new, Television Interact system being pieneered by "that hospital. The systein would provide a two-way television hookup between hospitals which could be used for consultation_ on medical problems arid also as a teaching tool. A pilot project was launched last week linking University Hospital and the. Wood- stock General Hospital. If it proves success- ful, the Health Ministry might extend the system . to other hoSpitals. Members of the team which included Pat Blewett, director of University Hospital; Dr. Lewis C.arey, chairdian of the department of radiOlogy and nuclear medicine at the University of Western Ontario and hospital University Hoipital trying to 'practice medicine in. Wingham; We're only there if you need us." Dr, R. Treleaven, radiologist at the Wingham Hespital,• said he "couldn't be ' more enthusiaStic" about the system noting that-wfie--of-his practicing alone is-he can't consult with colleagues. "Thee sooner the better," he declared,. Dr. McKim 'agreed that the system ,sounciS, marvellous, hut pointed out one problem is the question of cost. "Who covers the cost of a program like this?"' he inquired. "The hospital? The province?" Mr. Blewett said the Health Ministry has fundedthe $140,000 cost of the Woodstock: pilot project, and he.has been assured. liat if the 'prograM works the ministry will be willing to fund its extension to other areas. Mr. Hayes laterexplained that the presen- iation was intended primarily as, an educa tionai' program for the heard inembeh. Expansion of the Interact system tn.' thii hospital .or others in the area is, at tleaSt two years away, he estimated. 1/sTa e w . . the isolation of the site, The site is bounded on the north,, east and west by minor streams and, on the smith by :the CNR tracks.
