ilYith4i- d.ktile fort Of the Ganno 11*h-felled so she
was. Dun Gannon or the fort or hill of the
Gannons.
That description 'fits our ancestral
perfectly, but not . ours. The first two ,.
families to settle at our Dungannon' were
from the Irish Dungannon hence the:
name. They were the Malloughs in 1843
and the Davidsons in 1844; and their farms
were on the west corners ,of the present
village. According to the %Mon County
Atlas of 1879, Mr. Mallough laid out the
village in 1855.- 125 years ago. Hence this
year's Anniversary 'Celebration. Three
years previously the Post Office of. Wawa-
nosh was opened a short distance south of
the village:- After the survey, it- was
removed to the village and took the village
name:
I remember reading a true life story that
Wm. J. Stothers - a direct descendant of
the Malloughs - wrote for the WoMen's
Institute some years ago. Bill's people had
the farm oft the .southwest corner of- the
village. I expect they were his grandpar-
ents but could have been his great
grandparents... Mr. Mallougli worked in
Goderich at certain times of the year,
walking in on Monday s and home on
Saturday. There was an Indian camp
beside a creek that flowed through the
village then. The Chief had a daughter
abbut the age of Mrs, Mallough and. the
two young women became friends, al
though-they could not speak each other's
language. '
One day the Indian girl was visiting Mrs.
Mallough when two rough looking men
came in demanding food. When they found
that Mt. Mallough was not at home they
decided to stay the night. The Indian girl

Amherst Island lies at the east end of
Lake Ontario. There is an old story on the
Island that many years ago the 'Indian
Chief who owned the Island enjoyed
playing cards with the British Officers at
Fort Frontenac now Kingston. He envied
them their sscarlet tunics, and ,was finally
successful in winning' one, But then his
luck changed ant e had: nothing left but

. won the Island was, Irish and he refuied to
sell land to.prospettivesettlers,= it was for
rent only, and when he. went back 10'
Ireland. he became known as an absentee
landlord ,with an agent on the Island' to,
collect the rents. Many Irish settled on the
Island hitt they became discontent becaase
they could, not buy their farms.
I would like to tell you a true story about
one family. They had come. to Canada in.
1824 and rented a fariii there. Shortly
after they came, a small child died and he
was buried in the front corner 'of the farm

right, Bill.)
The chief could speak a little English as
he had been in the British army in. a war
some years before. I think I remember
reading in "In the, 'Days of the Canada
Company" by the Lizars sisters that a
Chief Wawanosh from Huron was in the
War of 1812, He , May be the Chief who
protected Mrs. Mallough and ttict..may be
where the Wawanosh Townships got their
name.
Fora. few years and after 1800, Ontario
had a' sort of population explosion. Many
United Empire Loyalists came to Canada
after the American War of Independence
and settled in various parts of Ontario.
Many Mennonites came at the same time
because they feared that they might not be
exempted from military 'service-under the
new Government. After the Napoleonic
War, many British Regiments ,were dis-
banded and the soldiers were without
work. The British Government offered.
• them land grants in' Upper .Canada - now
Ontario - large grants to the officers, and
- smaller to the private soldiers, The
refugees from .The Clearances in the High- '
lands of Scotland took refuge in Canada
also, There are probably descendants of all
these groups of people in the Dungannon
area now. - -
In the early 1800s with the invention of
steam-powered machinery and the rise of -
the Factory System, thousands 'in the
British Isles became unemployed. Canada
