This is not Mrs. Whiteside's first trip to Canada: In fact, she was born here. But her family left SaskatcheWan, destitute, in the 1930s when she was 10 years old. She has lived in Ireland since that time. During Dungannon's birthday celebrations, Mrs. Whiteside presented numerous gifts, including several coats of arms, greetings froth the Lord Mayor of Belfast and a cut glass bowl and solid silver server, both engraved. Dungannon, Ontario in, turn presented her with such gifts as Blue Mountain pottery, a souvenir mug, wine glass an d T-shirt andinaples yrupandinap 1 e sugar. While she has been here, Mrs. Whiteside has had the opportunity to meet several people she has been corresponding with, includin g a woman from Cincinatti, Ohio whom she has been writing to for 43 years. This woman made a s4pecial trip to Dungannon durin& birthday celebrations just to meet her. Frank McCarthy, 83, of Vancouver,. B,C. returned to Kingsbridge, where he was born, for the 75th anniversary of St. Joesph's Church there on July 27. He stalled his trip back to Vancouver so he could go to the plazuF last Wed- nesday in Dungannon and meet Mrs, Whiteside whom he had been corresponding with. He was thrilled to meet her, "My forefathers were all Irish," he says. Mrs. Whiteside, who is staying with Mr. and Mrs. John Spivak of Dungannon, is spending a total of three weeks in Canada. She sums up her visit by saying: "This feeling of friendship will give the people back home courage."
