The pull is a real'community effort. Each year the Tractor Pullers ASsociation donate their proceeds to community •projects such as. the _temzis_ceurts_avitich_received support, from last year's pull. Various own- munity service clubs assist with the pull including the Kinsmen, Lions and ,Tumor Farmers. These groups also use the money they raise 'on tractor pull weekend for community projects. The Lucknow Figure Skating Club operates a food, booth at'the pull and the money they raise helps pay the cost of ice rental and pros' fees which the club could not possibly meet through skaters' registration fees alone. The pull involves almost everyone from the local area because many belong to the various groaps who work at the pull and some work for two different organizations on the Weekend Others from the community Everyone is certainly aware Of the courageous exploits of Terry' Fox, a 21-year-old student who is running across Canada on one leg and an artificial limb. Fox lost his leg to cancer as a teenager and is now almost halfway to his goal of completing the 5,200 mile run. His goal is an unselfish one to raise $10 million for cancer research. The young man is running' in. pain. Quite often 'blood drips from the stump of his•arnputated leg onto the artificial limb. 13y the time he reaches mile 5,206 at the Pacific Ocean he will have gone through. 30 pairs of running shoes and three artificial limbs. Fox has undertaken his cross- country run, for reasons many wouldn't understand in these times.: To raise money for the combatting of a deadly disease that cost him a limb, to set an example of dedication and hope for other physically disabled people and , to face and Conquer possibly the stiffest challenge he coul&have set for himself. The country has embraced-young Fox' and his magnanimous struggle. The deed is noble and demanding in Barn raising BY SANDY NICHOLSON Recently, Bill and Jennie Porteous gave the Ontario ArchiVes what to me appears to be the best barn raising picture in the Archives large collection. Since then, Mae Ma.cInnes, her sister, Katherine and Jennie Porteous haye identified most Of those in the picture. The barn was owned by Mrs. George Irwin, and was on the Jim Irwin farm, lot 4, conc. 2 Kinloss, Bruce County. While the Irwins were not the first settlers on the second, John, George and Jim all had good buildings on lots 3 and 4 on the second. Clarence is the only one of my generation still living on his father's land. Even Clarence is not sure the year Of, this barn raising "The date must be 1916 or 1917. ThiS doesn't go. unrecognized.. The commentator at the pull on the weekend, Willard .Sallan, pointed' out to -the crowd 'of spectators that the money raised at the pull, was' "not going to fill someone`"' pockets". It would be used he said, for community. better Merit projects. • The weekend, pull was a success because everyone Worked -together and our community will be better fOr it. And tennis courts. Terry began his odyssey April 12 in ' St. Johns, Newfoundland and has ° been logging. 26 miles a day ever since. It has' been' a struggle but Fox knew that and has a point toprove, Along Canadian Highways, everyone who witnesses the run is taken up by Terry and his struggle. Canadians are stuffing' bills into his. 'hands and industries are initiating pledges. The closest Fox vvill get to this region is his romp through the Lucan, St. Marys-Stratford area of South- western Ontario. His ideals and determination are something all can admire and applaud. ' How often have you felt like abandoning' a work' project• due to - illness, lack of motivation or interest, or because there' was no personal benefit. How often have you gone out of your way for the benefit of someone else? , Terry Fox runs in pain, but bume ay, ig-UffOrtg-rn-ay mean lif e for d person that Foic--rnay never know. D.S.
