SAGINAW, :Mich,—The ex-husband of ' a
woman whose eharred ,body was dound on: a
Huron County farm near GOderich March 25
was remanded in custody for trial Friday on a
charge;o4nurder.
Gene Woodward of Saginaw was arrested'inr
Lorig Island, NY. in April and charged after
- the body of his ex-wife Jean, 24, had been
.identified through denfal- charts. He appeared
Friday at a preliminary hearing on the charge.
Saginaw prosecutor Robert Kaczrnarek said
Woodward will have the charges read to liirn in
the circuit court June 30 or July 7, at which time
he is expected to enter a plea and have a trial
date set. . •
State officials decided to proceed. with the
trial in Michigan, rather than Ontario, because
under Michigan law it• isn't necessary to prove
the woman was murdered in the state, only that
an abduction 'had taken place, He said under--Ontario law, t would have to have: een proved.
that the women was murdered'in Ontario.
,"It' seemed best to hear it (the, case) here,"
the prosecutor Said."
Michigan pOlice said earlier they have
determined. that the last plaCe the. Woman, was
seen alive was leaving her Saginaw residenee-
Feb.
A good deal of the discussion. at the
inaugural meeting centered around the
notice of Motion served by Turnberry
Township, at, the annual Meeting. The ,.
motion, which is to. be, discussed and
voted on next year; would restrict the
right to nominate a representative to
the hospital: board to residents of the
municipalitY he or she is to'represent.
FolloWing some initial hesitation, it
was agreed at the annual meeting that
the , bylaws could be a.mended to ac-
commodate . this proposal. However_
solicitor Robert Campbell now has
suggested it cannot be done without
applying_to the_provincial goverfinient
for a supplement to 'the letters pateift '
under which the hospital established
as a corpOraltion.,
In a letter directed to Mr. Hayes, Mr.
Campbell reported he has discussed
the 'matter With colleagues and sees
several Problems with the Turtiberry
notice of motion. . '
Following some discussion; board
members agreed the matter is too
complicated for them and decided to
call for a representative from -their
solicitors, Goodall and Campbell,. to
attend the September meeting and try
to resolve it.
In the meantime Members will-be
given copies of the hospital bylaws and
letters patent to study. 2.
Mr. Newton added'.that, while Ice
wasn't sure of all the legalities, "I think
itis a fair request that a municipality
shOuld at least have the right to
nominate." ,
Mr: Hill noted that the solicitor's
letter doesn't state specifically .that it
can't be done, but does say there is
• some question about the matter; and he
urged the, board to attempt to clarify
the situation.
