Rod 'Watson of Staffordshire, 20
'miles north of Birmingham, is touring
farms in eight counties in Ontario while
on, the 11-week exchange. • A
-representative of the National
Federation of England and Wales
Young Farmers Clubs, Rod is staying
on the farm of Clarence Ritchie in
Kinloss Township while in this area.
. Rod, who, is in partnership with his
father on their 100 acre beef farm, says
it would be too costly for the English
farmer to use the automation practical
on Qntario farms, unless he is ex-
ceptionally big, • •
Rod has noted several other dif-
ferences between English and Ontario
farm's. Rod finds Ontario fanners feed
their beef .cattle more corn than they do
at home. ,English farmers feed their
beef a concentrate pellet for protein,
hay, barley and oats.
Most farmers in the Staffordshire
area are specializing in dairy with beef
on the side while the Marsons are
running all beef. Inflation is hitting the
English farmer as well. The margin of
profit on an animal is not much, says
Rod, and the cost° of equipment, seed
and fertiliier is increasing faster than
commodity prices. The average
acreage is a_120-acre farm. Milk and
potato marketing boards are in effect
but only the potato board has quotas.

• Rod isn't sure hell be able to apply
Ontario methods on his farm in
England. The° automated systems
aren't practical to English farming but
the program, he says, has been a good
experience. It's been interesting to see ,
how Ontario farmers raise beef.
