We had to pick the apples,
and, the packers would come
and sort them, 'taking the
best and packing 'them in
barrels, We had to. deliver
them to a box car in LucknOW
u--..--.-fer-thesum-o-f--7$-1 a
barrel. Just goes to Show
you; how hard a dollar Was' to
come by in those days...And
the going Tate for pitching
sheaVes in harvest was $1 a
day,
In winter we had skating
on the 'ponds, and some
winters Jack Glenn had an
open; air rink in Dungannon,
and a warm 'place to change
our skates. yVe had sleigh
.riding parties, on fait home
made bobsleds, mostly on
river hill and. Glenn's Hill,
and on Cook's hill on 9th
concession of West Wawa-
nosh.
We always had a lot of

the fall, one boy on the
paring machine and two girls
Wowing for each machine.
We worked ten hours a day
with pay $1.00 a.day,,and you
really had to produce or the
foreman would tell you about
maehine--Vo
would be plenty soaked with
apple juice.
Robt. Moore Was night
man and kept, fires going to
dry apples. The apples would
dry overnight and,,the kilns
would, be ready to load again
in the morning. I had been
working in the place, the day
it burned down; so I lost illy
job.
We had about three acres
of apple orchards at borne,
lovely apples, mostly Kings,
Spies and . lialdwins. Not
much trouble with worms in
those days. Lots of bluebirds
and other birds and I believe
'they took care of worms,
We had about three acres
of , apple orchards in those
daYs, and had large bins of
apples in cellar for winter
use. In the evenings we
WOuld have apples to peel by
machine, and slice for drying
on a rack` above the kitchen
range:. It was loaded at all
times, as that was what we
used to trade in for groceries
at Ben Crawford's store;
mostly flout, 'sugar and tea
etc. as we had most other
necessities of our own, such
`.as ' fruit, vegetables, milk,
eggs and butter. We Usually
hada keg'of salted lake trout,
a. quarter of beef or would
slaughter a hog for winter
use,
We had a plentiful supply
of game in the woods and
bunting was. good, lots of
partridge, 'snow shoe and
• cotton tail rabbits, also fox,
coons-and-muskrats-.-There
were no deer in this' part of
the, country in my earliest
days, but were quite plentiful
later, 1 can recall how peace-
ful it was to be up in
SterVart's swamp hunting on
a real stormy day. "It 'was so
still and sheltered from the
wind, Perhaps a light snow
sifting down, and listen to
the music of a couple ..of
hounds mining the rabbits.
They had • some good • rabbit
hounds in those days. Some
times yOu could hear them
back in the swamps running
all night.
The, old Dungannon bridge
was built in 1917. I believe by
Sandy and Grant. It was a The only convenience We had
concrete arch, something was Ihe little houie on the
new.in bridge construction at prairie with the air condition,
that time, Many heavy ing and solar heat, where the
- beams were used to hold the snow blew in and covered the
forms up :and took all Om- seat,
titer tol build, At. that time I
was -Woring-at-tbe -"Rhrer--Wlnt LintlfieittAtfaef$6-
Valley Creamery, which 'was - 1897 - 19
pearthe bridge, so I 'have
watched the building. of the •
new bridge, and the Old one
which has been real inter-
esting.
We did not have any
luxurious in those daysjust
thebare necessities, YOU did
a lot of walking Until you
Could afford an. old bicycle.'
• We had no electricity and
.no telephone. We had oil
lamps for light, which was an
improvement over the cand-
les which our forefathers had
- for lights. If we had any kind „
of bath all winter, it had to be
in a tub by the kitchen stove,
wood to cut in winter, to keep
the home 'fires burning, The
old house had no insulation
or storm windows, ,therefore
those stoves had an awful
appetite' for wood, and yea*
kept warm two Ways, cutting
the-wood-and burning it.
