The program: announced last week by= the
Ontario government to assist 'farmers with
high interest rates has met with general
disappointment in the farm community. The
anirass for retarded-
feeling is that the program doesn't go far
enough,
"I feel like I came in for dinner, but was
given a couple of cookies, said MPP Bob
McKessock (Grey-Liberal) commenting on
the program.
The program,announced by provincial
treasurer Frank Miller and agriculture
minister Lorne Henderson will subsidize
on money
A London girl is in serious condition in
London's Victoria Hospital with head
injuries and a broken leg after being struck
by a car in Huron Township on Sunday
morning. r
JOlie - Bennett, 7, was walking along
concession 2 of Huron Township with two
friends, juanita and Roxanne White, of R. 5
Lucknow, when the accident occurred.
;The driver of the car, Bernard flarternink,
R. 5 Lucknow, was driving westbound when
he came over a hill and saw the children
walking on the road. He applied the brakes
and swerved to miss the children but his car
"struck the Bennett child,
She was taken by ambulance to Kincar-
dine General Hospital and later transferred
to. Vietoria Hospital, in London. Julie is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill ,Bennett of
London. The family was spending the
weekend at their summer home in tho area.

borrowed at more than .12 per centi interest
up to a maximum of $50,000. The program
is retroactive to April 1 and runs for nine
months, with the subsidy paid at the end'of
that period or when the, short-term financing
is completed. Henderion also wants an
equity level of 50 per cent placed on the
program which means a farmer• cannot
receive assistance unless he has borrowed
more than 50 per cent of his equity. •
The maximum any one farmer can receive
is $1,125' according to McKessock and "if
this little bit will help a farrnet stay solvent,
he wasn't •in bad shape to begin with."
It's not the kind of encouragement
farmers need at this point to keep them on
the farm stated McKessock. The govern-
ment was pressured into doing something
and they bring out, this program of assist-
ance and few people will figure out how little
it is. lt's a media gimmick he, commented.
City people will believe 'the farmers got the
assistance they needed and the government
comes out smelling like a rose.
McKessock presented a private member's
bill in the Legislature'last month, calling for
a government program to help Ontario
farmers remain competitive, similar to
programs already in place in other Canadian
provinees.
MeXessock said he isn't hopeful the
federal government will offer any assistance.
He said Canadians should be looking. more
seriously at agriculture in, the :light 'of
preserving farmland and farmers. We have
the land he observed, but we need people to
farm it.
Many farmers he said will go out of
business' quietly without declaring bank-
ruptcy which leads to federal agriculture
minister Eugene Whelan's observation that
firm bankruptcies have not risen alarmingly
since the drastic increase in interest rates.
