The C,ancer Clinic at the Wingham and
District is 4 consultative ,follow
clinic for patients, which, when established in
1959, was the first in Ontario.
is the only follow up clinic between

started,;patients„ from, Lions -Head were

up by the Cancer Clinic at LOndon's Victoria

Owen.Sound and in Kitchener to serve the
area as well as the ,Wingham _clinic.
The Ontario Cancer Foundation operates, a.
system of centralized treatment and re-

the one at Victoria' as well as Princess

Speaking of cancer as a 'disease, Dr,
Watson says the idea that cancer is incurable ^
is a myth.- More than 50 per cent of the •
cancer patients are being cured. Methods of
treatment are steadily being' improved.
Surgical treatment is only one method. New

People Back In Action ---
Because Arthritis• Research
Is-Paying Off; was the theme
of the,; Annnal Region Meet-
ing held by The Arthriti$
ociety volunteers at, the
Walkerton Golf and Country
Club on Saturday, April 26,
campaign and other supple-
mentary fund-raising actiVitr
ies was 562,248.00. The vol.:
unteers were commended for
their efforts.
Speakers at the meeting
included Mr. George Wel-
ling, Assistanct Executive
Director,. Ontario Diviiion;
and Dr. Gunnar Kraag,
Rheumatologist at McMaster
Medical Centre in Hamilton..
Dr. Kraag emphasized the
impact of arthritis and rheu-
matism on every community
in- Canada. Loss, from work
because of the various forms
of arthritis and rheumatism
is second only to.respiratory •
infections and the cost to the
economy is enormous.. The
suffering and incapaCity of
individual patients is'incalcu-
lable 'and yet an attitude of
"Well, it's only arthritis and
I am getting old" is all . too
prevalent.. Patients should no
more accept a diagnosis of
"arthritis" than a diagnosis
bf 'chest pain".
There are: well over 150
different forms of :arthritis
arid rheumatism,*many • of
which can be very well
:controlled and even mired.
The establishment of Rheu-
idatic. Disease Units through-.
out Canada and the increase
in, the number of rheiimatol
-ogists serving various coin-
munitieS, has been 'a trem
endous. boon to the individual
—patient.
This improvement :in
health care to patients with
,...arthritics has_ not come about
by enlightened government
or university action, but
rather by the efforts of The
Arthritis Society. The back-
bone of The Arthriti5 Society
is the. many Volunteers who
promote the. Society's object-
ives and help raise funds for
the research which has al-
rady reaped tremendous
benefits. We can now share
the optimism that not only
Will patients get "back in
action" but that continued
investment in research will
pay off with a cure to a.
problem that, sooner.or later,
affects us all.
The meeting was adjourn-
- .ed following the showing of
an informative film on Arth-
risits, narrated by Henry
Fonda, entitled "Wherever
You Are".
