As more .of us are using More wood for
heating the f011owing item from the Ontario
'Lumber Manufacturers Association is inter
esting.
As- anyone who has had a disastruus
experience with smoke and sparks can tell
you, the first step to a good fire is the use of
proper wood. The following poem is helpful
in__determining—the- burning--qualities- -of
.. wood.
Beechwood fires are bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year.
Chestnut's only; good, they say,
If for long it's laid away.
Birth and fire logs burn too fait,
Blaze up bright and do not last.
Elm wood burns like .a churchyard mold.
Even the very flames are cold.
Poplar gives a bitter smoke,
Fills your eyeS and Makes you choke:
Apple wood willscent your room
With an incense like perfume.
'Oak and maple, if dry and old,
Keep away the Winter cold.
But ash wood wet and ash wood dry
A king shall warm his slippers by!
