Chapman family was one

Ripley - the fererunner of
this Ripley Expresi and
their family continued in
buSiness here till the
summer of 1923 when
they moved to Kin-
cardine. Our thanks .to

In the snow: flurries. One
Morning last week ,a
raven was ,sighrettflying—
in the north' part of
Ripley. It was about the
size of ,•a large hawk or'
owl - about half as big
again as its cousin the
ordinary crow. It never
'made any sounds.
Ravens do not caw: so the
book states, Also ravens

. man, They are the black
birds of the wind-swept,
snowy Arctic. If this was
a raven, it is only the
second one this writer has
sighted. The first one was .

cedar bush a couple of
miles north of Lucknow.

TWice during the past
week the wailing sound of
the Ripley fire whistle cut
through' the cold snowy
air over the village. The
, first call was just before
five on. Tuesday af-
ternoon January 29, when
the Ripley firemen were
called to the farm of Mr.•
and Mrs. Keith van der
Hoek on the sixth con-
cession east in Huron
township. Here an
overheated dryer had
caused fire to break out in
their brick home and
spread into the inner
walls. In the losing battle,
firemen drew eight loads
of water from Ripley - six
with the tank truck and
two.' with the "old" fire
engine. At one point they
almost had it contained
and likely would have
extinguished it if More
water had been available.
The brick house on the
north side of the road was
burned out. The family is
reported now living in his
parents' place about a
mile west on the same
ioad by the railway
crossing at the sixth and
-granddaughters, also
three. sisters - Fern (Mrs.
