Pair charged in Legion fire remanded again Leonard Gordon Cowie and Robert Martin Killick, the two men charged in connection with the fire that gutted the Brussels Legion in early June, have been remanded to appear again in Wingham District Court on September 28 for election of plea. Judge R.G.E. Hunter granted the remand after the pair appeared before him at Wingham Court on August 24, following a comment by duty counsel Alan Mill that the lawyersfortheco-accused “ap pear to be going in different directions” in the matter. Judge Hunter suggested that the former Brussels residents “get their counsel together” before their next appearance. Mr. Cowie has been charged separately with one count of theft and two counts in violation of the highway traffic act following an unrelated incident in Wingham on August 5, and will appear for election of plea on these as well as on September 28. Barry William Comeau, former ly of Walton, also made a brief appearance before Judge Hunter on August 24, and was also remanded to September 28 for election of plea after telling the court he will not be requesting a trial. Mr. Comeau faces several weapons-related charges as the result of a four-hour stand-off with police in Walton on June 1. Jeffrey David Springer of God erich was also remanded to the September session of Wingham District Court after telling JuBge Hunter that he would enter a plea of guilty to the possession of stolen property. Mr. Springerfirst ap peared in Wingham court in July when an interim judge struck down his guilty plea after the Goderich man said he had found the property in question, two stereo speakers which had allegedly been taken from Marks Bros. Auto Body Ltd. in Wingham. Andrew Gerard Michael Phelan, formerly of RR 2, Blyth, made his third court appearance before Judge Hunter on a charge of arson laid last March, and was remanded to September 28 for trial. After producing proof that resti- tution had been made in three counts of mischief involving pro perty in Belgrave last May, Kevin Powell of Auburn was given a conditional discharge, placed on probation for 12 months, and instructed by Judge Hunter to perform 100 hours of community service within the next six months, as recommended by his probation officer. John H. Hockey of RR 1, Belgrave was fined $250 after pleading guilty to the theft of a car stereo in Morris Twp. last April; the stereo was recovered but the fine was levied after the duty counsel Mill noted that the theft “obviously took a good deal of planning.” December 21 has been set as the trial date for Murray Leonard Derbyshire of RR 1, Belgrave, who appeared before Judge Hunter to plead not guilty to a charge of cruelty to animals, laid following an incident at his East Wawanosh farm last April. The trial is expected to be a lengthy one, Judge Hunter said, with nine witnesses for the crown alone to be called. Gary Heyden of Harriston was fined $750, put on probation for 12 months and ordered to make restitution for the damage he had inflicted on an automobile in Bluevale last April, after he pled guilty to a charge of mischief laid in connection with the incident. Peter Joseph Robinson of Kip pen was sentenced to 60 days in jail, had three months’ probation added to the three years’ probation he is already serving, and was ordered to take counselling for drug and alcohol abuse after pleading guilty to failing to obey the terms of his probation. Noting that Mr. Robinson had twice been convicted of the possession of a narcotic within the past few months, Judge Hunter said “What do I have to do to get through to you? Maybe it’s time you tried jail.’’ Finally, Judge Hunter sentenc ed Paul Gerald Martin of RR 3, Wroxeter to 60 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to driving while being prohibited to do so; and levied fines of $750 each, as well as a 12-month licence suspension, on Gary Wayne Storey of Wingham, Robert E. Lebbink of Harriston, and Paul James McIntosh of Lucknow, after each man pleaded guilty to a liquor-related driving charge. &ck to School o Canada Dry ass'f vat. 750ml bfl. plus dep. ioo*t s 2, SOFT DRINKS .39* &reat far the Old Masonic Lodge record found Julie Coulter of Brussels made an interesting discovery recently while doing some work on her house.
