The attending bands besides Brussels were: the host band: the Clinton Legion Pipe Band; The Pip es and Drums of the Forrest City (London); The Petrolia Pipes and Drums; The Bay City Pipes and Drums and the Seaforth All-Girls Marching Band. The grandstand at the Clinton Raceway was jam-packed with some spectators having to stand on the ground. It was obvious the crowd was anxious to see the many Leola Hood wins Big Value prize bands play together as one. The band members were also as anxious if not more! The forming of the mass bands and organizing began at 7:15 p.m. with show time being 8:00 p.m. Each band was lined up in single file beside each other. Together the many bands, now as one, marched down the race track in front of the grandstand where both the American and Canadian An thems were sung by a member of the Clinton Legion Pipe Band and opening speeches were heard. The mass band marched down the track again and then each band played separately while putting all their efforts into their own part of Leola Hood of Brussels is the winner this week of the Big Value draw in The Citizen. The crowd was very happily entertained as standing ovations, whistles, and shouts from the spectators were given to each band as they played as well as the mass band. After each band played they all formed up again at the end of the track and marched down in front of the grandstand playing some more exciting but traditional Scottish tunes. “AmazingGrace” was then played by all the pipers and the spotlight was put on a lone piper who played the beautiful song again. The mass band then marched down the track again and around into the Clinton Arena where all 138 men and women of all ages gathered into a huge circle to finish the tune for the finale. A dance followed as all the bands and spectators enjoyed the night with some unexpected intermis sions from some ba nds who still wanted to play and play they did with many intermissions occuring throughout the night. It’s an honour to be in the Brussels Legion Pipe Band and it was an honour to take part in this non-competitive event. It was an exciting and overwhelming exper- ience for me as I met many new friends and had a fantastic time. - I would like to thank the Clinton Legion Pipe Band and all who took part in the organization of this successful event and I can’t wait until next year.
