Hullett No. 1 completed an undefeated season in Peewee action Saturday by winning the townships league tournament in Benmiller over Hullett No. 2. Hullett battle for crown Host Bly th team wins Mite tournament crown On Saturday, August 20 Blyth hosted the Tri-County, Mite Boys, South Division Tournament. The teams in the A-division were Belgrave, Clinton, Wingham, and Winthrop. The winner of this division was Wingham, who will now advance and play the winner of the North division. The B division consisted of three teams, Blyth, Brussels and Sea­ forth with Blyth coming up the winners of the “B” division. Blyth’s first game was at 9 Saturday morning against Brus­ sels. Blyth won the game with a score of 34 to 22. Home runs in the game were hit by Brad Anderson, Brad Montgomery and Ryan Hall­ ahan. The next game for Blyth was at 1 p.m. against Seaforth with Blyth coming up winners again with a score of 21 to 16. Home runs in this game went to Wes Wilson and RyanHallahan. All the boys played very well during the two games despite the warm weather. Excel­ lent pitching for the two games was by Wes Wilson and Brad Ander­ son. With the success of winning both games the boys received the B trophy for the south half of Tri County and each team member received a pennant. Teammembersare: Brad An­ derson, Connie Abel-Rinn, Chad Haggitt, Ryan Hallahan, Kevin Hallahan, Brad Montgomery, Jerry Mason, Mark Nesbitt, Trent Richmond, Calvin Schmidt, Chris Stewart and Wes^Wilson. Coaches Brad, Maureen and Marg congratulated the boys on their successful accomplishment on Saturday and for the enjoyable season had by all. They also thanked the Legion Auxiliary and the ball committee for their donations to help make it a successful day and thanked the sponsors. at Peewee Tournament Sports Two Hullett teams fought it out for the championship of the township league’s Peewee tourn­ ament held in Benmiller on Saturday. In the end it was Hullett 1 completing an unbeaten season defeating their neighbours Hullett 2 by a 12-6 count. Hullett 2 gave their friendly rivals a scare jumping out to a 6-2 lead by the end of the second inning in the final game. Hullett 1 chipped away scoring single runs in the first, second and third innings before breaking things open with a six-run fourth inning. They added assurance with a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Meanwhile Chris Kennedy shut down Hullett 2’s offence throwing shut-out ball the rest of the way to secure the victory. Mark Bylsma added another home run to the total he had accumulated in the tournament. Hullett 1 reached the finals after some difficult going in the early rounds. After sprinting out to a first-inning 3-0 Hullett saw Goder­ ich Township fight back with two ru ns in the second to make it a close game. Hullett added a single run in the third to stretch the lead but Goderich Twp. closed the gap again by scoring in the bottom of the third. The teams were shut out in the fourth and each scored a run in the fifth. Mark Bylsma stole home in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead then Hullett shut down Goderich Twp. in the bottom of the inning to win their way into the championship round. Mark Bylsma hit a home run and two triples for Hullett while Chris Kennedy went all the way pitching recording seven strikeouts. Mark Bylsma took over the pitching as Hullett 1 met Tucker­ smith in the second round and racked up 11 strikeouts. The game was closer than the final 9-3 total for much of the way. Tuckersmith struck early with a run in the first but Hullett chipped in single runs in the second, third and fourth to build a lead. They then wrapped up thewinwithsixrunsin the sixth before Tuckersmith came back with three in the top of the seventh. Mark Bylsma helped his own cause with home runs in the second and in the sixth when he hit a mammoth shot that cleared the fence. Hullett 2 swamped Bayfield 19-9 in the first round of the tournament early Saturday morn­ ing. Randy Shepherd helped his own cause with a home run as well as pitching a strong game. In the second game against Colborne township, Hullett 2 scored two in the first inning to take an early lead then widened the margin with five in the third, before adding one run in the fourth and three in the sixth. Colborne scored single runs in the first, second and third and two each in the fourth, fifth and sixth. Winthrop, Blyth Bantam girls series tied Blyth Bantam girls pulled out a heart-stopper to tie their bestof three Tri-county playoff series with Winthrop at one game each Thursday night in Blyth. With time nearly running out on the time limit, Blyth trailed 11-10 and some fans had even left thinking the game and the season was over. Butthe umpire said there was time left to continue and continue they did with Blyth fighting back to tie the game and force overtime then win it two innings later. The additional inning didn’t look good when Winthrop stretched their lead by scoring two more runs. In the bottom of the inning Blyth battled back to score three runs and tie the game. BETTER WE WILL DEMONSTRATE Blyth Inn wins Blyth Slo-pitch crown Blyth Inn captured yet another tournament crown August 14 when it won the Blyth Industrial League slo-pitch tournament, coming out on top of 31 other teams. TheInnbeatBlueMacs3-l in the championship game as Barney Stewart went the distance pitch­ ing, recording three strikeouts and winning the most valuable player award for his team. Gary Koebel, who hit a second inning home run for the Blue Macs’ only run was MVP for the losing team. Bly th Inn took a 1 -0 lead in the first inning but Koebel’s homerun tied the game after two. The Inn scored another run in the third and added an insurance run in the sixth to salt away the victory. In the consolation final, God­ erich Chrysler shut out Blyth Burkholders 4-0 for the champion­ ship. Goderich scored two in the first and two in the fourth. Don Johnston pitched a shut out to win the most valuable player award for Goderich while Fred Meier played a strong game in fieldjor Burk­ holders as their most valuable player.
