The Huron County Industrial Training Committee, located in Goderich, has received a $20,975 operating grant from the Ministry of Skills Development, Jack Rid dell, M.P.P. for Huron, announced recently. Skills development Minister Al vin Curling noted that the commit tee was a valuable resource in promoting a training culture throughout the province. “Because the committee mem bers operate in the heart of a community, they provide a source of planning knowledge and can be relied on to anticipate training needs,” Mr. Curfing said. “The committee members come from a variety of backgrounds, but they all have a common interest in train ing.” Community Industrial Training Committees are autonomous or ganizations made up of volunteers from business, industry, labour, education, and government. The committees are funded by the provincial and federal govern ments. “Employers are becoming in creasingly aware ofthefactthat training and retraining the present labour force is the most efficient way to compete in this rapidly- changingworldeconomy,” Mr. Riddell said, “the information and expertise provided by this commit tee will be of great help in developing and promoting a train ing culture among employers in the area.” For more information on Com munity Industrial Training Com mittees and other ministry training programs, call the toll-free Train ing Hotline number: 1-800-387- 5656. 1 Blyth Christian highway 4^ Reformed Church 4 BLYTH Readings by Elder J. High school students to help MVCA Twenty-eight Ontario high school students have been given an opportunity to participate in a seven-week workshop about con servation, sponsored by the Mini stry of Natural Resources. The Program, started in 1986, gives young people first-hand exposure to natural resources, their management, and conserva tion issues. The participants, who come from all regions of the province, are . selected by a panel of ministry staff on the basis of their age and their answers to a questionnaire on environmental issues. Workshops are located in four different areas. Conservation Au thorities in North Bay evaluate wetlands, while others develop new hiking trials in Sault Ste. Marie. The Maitland Valley Con servation Authority will benefit from students helping map the physical and biological features of aneighbouringcreek while stu dents at the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority will study water erosion. The students work under the supervision of ministry and con servation authority staff. They receive a living allowance, meals, and accommodation.
