PAGE 13.’ Zurich's Bean Festival revisited BY RAYMOND CANON There are two festivals in this part of Ontario that I try to visit eaeh year. One is that held in the village of Zurich and the other is held on some farm in the Perth- Huron county area to celebrate the Swiss National Holiday. The Zur ich one takes place on the third Sunday in August while the Swiss one is generally on the last Sunday in July in order to celebrate the Swiss National Holidav on August 1. Under normal conditions 1 am in Switzerland about the end of July so 1 have been celebrating the August 1 date in that country. As a matter of fact a couple of years ago 1 ended up going to see the famous play on William Tell by the German dramatist Friedrich Schiller. This is something that I had been wanting to do for many years so another of my dreams got fulfilled. Generally 1 am back in Canada by the time that the Zurich bash takes place so I slip up there to see what this year's crop of beans taste like. However, conditions are not normal this year. I attended the celebrations of the Thames Valley Swissclub on July 31 which was held on a farm between Monkton and Brussels. The very next day I got in a plane and flew to Switzerland which means that I will miss the bean feed at Zurich. May be some day I will be able to get to both of them in Canada but at least I try. Since Zurich, Ontario, is named after the Swiss city, perhaps.it might be nice if we could have a Swiss theme at the bean festival. This is not to suggest that the Swiss, at least those in Switzer land, are great bean eaters al though beans certainly do find a place on their diet. It would be just something to call attention to the fact that Zurich is, after all, a Swiss word. Well, what could we do in Zurich, Ontario. Well, for openers we could have an apple-shooting contest ala William Tell with prizes being f$ven for the person who hits the apple first with a bow and arrow. I doubt that you’re going to get anybody to volunteer to have an apple put on their head (I’m certainly not) so we could have plastic models made up or some thing like that would hold an apple on the head. When we got tired of that, we could wander over to the Alphorn blowing contest. You all know the Alphorn. It is that huge musical instrument about 15 ft. long which produces music by being blown on but I warn you, it is not as easy as it looks. The crowd could judge which person was able toobtain the most melodic notes. Remember that it is by listening to the Alphorn th at the Swiss cows are the most contented bovines to be found anywhere. When that was done, there would be the yodelling contests. Letmettellyouone thing. You may think that cowboys can yodel but 1 BRUSSELS OFFICE HOURS Monday -10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tuesday - Closed Wednesday -10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Thursday -10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Friday -10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday - Closed Sunday - Closed SUMMER SELLABRATION Jeep/Eagle Dealers of Ontario LISTOWEL CHRYSLER Plymouth CHRYSLER AM/FM stereo radio with 4 speakers quartz digital clock split bench front seats light group clearcoat paint right and left remote control mirrors luxury wheel covers tinted glass ★ AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSI ★ 3-0 LITRE V-6 ENGINE After $750 Cashback from Chrysler has been assigned to dealer See your individual dealer for freight and PDI charges In stock vehicles only (j<;aler trade may tm required Taxes and license extra.
