Grey Township has become the second Huron County municipality to get Into garbage recycling, with the official opening last Saturday of the huge new recycling bin at the Grey Twp. landfill site near Walton. Grey recycling program begins Walton Compiled by Mrs. Betty McCall. Phone 887-6677 Joan Perrie returns from South Pacific tour With the installation of a giant bin at its Walton landfill site, Grey Township has become the second municipality in Huron County to start recycling its trash. The 50 cubic yard, three-bin container was installed at the site last week, and saw its first day of operation on Saturday, several weeks earlier than had been expected when the township opted for recycling last January. Ed Saxon of RR 3, Brussels, has been hired to ensure that only recyclable itemsaredepositedinthebin, a vital step in the project’s success. It’s Mr. Saxon’s job to make sure only the right items are placed in the correct bin, and he is the only person permitted to do so. One wrong item in the container could result in the contents of the entire load being rejected by the recy clers, says Brad Knight, clerk treasurer of Grey Twp. Acceptable items, properly se parated, are newsprint, household tins and household bottles and jars, but the criteria for each are stringent: no coated paper, no metal other than food and drink cans, and no glass other than bottles and jars - no window panes, lightbulbs, china, etc. In addition, all items must be clean, and should be compacted as much as possible. Walton landfill site users have already received a brochure on the proper use of the new container, and reception to the plan has been enthusiastic, says Grey Twp. Reeve Leona Armstrong. In addition, the Ethel Women’s Institute is sponsoring a recycling information seminar at Grey Cen tral School on September 13, and the video, David Suzuki’s “Re cycling is Smart’’, will be made available to school classes and community groups this fall. The purchase cost of the recycl ing container was $8,200, with two-thirdsofthatsubsidized by grants; as well, recycled items can be sold at $25 per ton. Funding is also available towards the cost of implementing a “blue box’’ curb side pick-up program in the hamlets of Walton and Ethel, which will likely start later this year, Reeve Armstrong says. The entire population of Grey Twp. uses the Walton landfill site, as well as do about 10 per cent of the population in each of Morris and McKillop Twps.; access to the dump is strictly controlled by the use of identification cards. West Wawanosh, which began a similar recycling program earlier this month, is the only other Huron County township to have adopted the program so far.
