Society holds flower show Studying some of the stranger forms of plant life to be seen at the Brussels Horticultural Society’s annual Flower Show on August 10, Gretta Hoover, front, and Leona Armstrong, both of Brussels, discuss the cactus class. The Flower Show and Supper attracted a large number to the basement of the Anglican Church in the village. The Brussels and District Horti­ cultural Society has had a busy summer and with the help of those helpful people who have watered and weeded flower boxes and beds around town have made a very pleasing display. Mrs. Peggy Cudmore judged the Rose Show in June which resulted in Jane White and Helen Dobson being tied for the 1 st prize plaque, Ruth Sauve won the second prize plaque and Eluned McNair the third prize plaque. Heather Dob­ son was the Junior winner. A bake sale was also a feature of the day. The picnic held in the Maitland Valley park in July brought members together again for an enjoyable afternoon and the August Flower Show and Supper on August 10 was well attended by the general public. Mrs. Frank Phillips of Seaforth judged the Flower Show in which there were 120 entries. Helen Dobson of Ethel won the Vera Frayne trophy for overall excel­ lence. The other class winners were: Specimens - Ruth Sauve; Arrange­ ments, Leona Armstrong; Roses, Eleanor Hemingway and Sandra Machan (tied) and house plants, Jane White. The Junior overall winner was Heather Somers. The winner of the Specimen Class, Jennifer Machan and for Arrangements, Kelly Overholt. Brussels People made by Mrs. Ella Graber, assist­ ed by Mrs. Ida Evans and Mrs. Joan Jacobs. On the weekend Jack and Marilyn Higgins attended the wedding of Randy Imeson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Imeson of Wheatly. The Imeson family are former residents of Brussels. Com piled by Marilyn Higgins Call887-9089 Mr. and Mrs. Jack Noble of Hanover and Mrs. Ann Ward of St. Marys visited last week with Mrs. Jean Higgins and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Higgins, they also visited with Alvie Higgins in the Listowel Hospital. Mr. Lome Dale has returned to his home following surgery at University Hospital in London. We wish you a speedy recovery Lome and hope to see you out and around real soon. On Wednesday, August 10, 14 residents of Callander Nursing Home, Brussels gathered on the lawn at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pearson. Sitting under the trees, they enjoyed punch and delicious home made biscuits the return trip home Jack and Marilyn spent the afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Ward and Julie of St. Marys at their trailer at Cedar Bay Camp Grounds. If we think we’ve had a hot and dry summer, travel down to Leamington District, their corn stalks are 2l/i to 3’ high with a dozen cobs of corn selling at $3.50, watermelons sell for over $6 and their lawns are like stubble of a grain field. Guests visiting with Sheila Richards atthecottage on Fairy Lake, Huntsville, recently includ­ ed her grandson, David Richards, Victoria, B.C.; Jane and Douglas ^Richards, Ailsa Craig; Curtis Graber; Mim and Doug Zehr, Shara Lee and Carisa; Agnes and Larry Proulx and David, Ethel; and Anne and Pat Schofield of New­ market.
