Brussels Bantam boys win Wai ton crown Telling him where to go and how to get there, Walton Bantam co-coach Pat Nolan urges on Mike Boven of RR 4, Walton as he crosses third base heading for home in a game against Milverton in the annual Walton Bantam Tournament held last weekend. Walton won this game to advance to the semi-finals, where they were defeated by the Kitchener Bantams. Walton hosts a Squirt Tournament this weekend. The Brussels Jr. Tigers were the “A” Championship winners in the Walton Sports Club Bantam Tournament over the weekend, capturing the McGavin Farm Equipment trophy by defeating the Kitchener Bantams by a score of 3-2 in one of the tightest games of the tournament. Brussels Mite girls lose heart-breaker Saturday, August6was the Mite Girl Ball Tournament which was held in Seaforth. The Brussels team played three very exciting games. At 10 a.m. Brussels met the Fordwichteam, defeating them 18-11. The next challenge was Wing­ ham at 3 p.m. During the season, the Brussels team won one game and lost one game to Wingham, so this game was referred to as “the rubber”. The coin was tossed, Brussels won as home team. At the end of the first inning Brussels had gone through their batting order with the score of 9-5. Second inning Brussels was still ‘‘on a roll” leading 16-5. Third inning score was 16-6for Brussels. At the end of the fourth, score Brussels 20, Wingham 7. Final score Brussels 20, Wingham 7. The girls played super ball. The next game was scheduled for 5 p.m. against Atwood. In the season, Atwood finished infirst place while Brussels finished in second spot. The coin was tossed and Brus­ sels came out as home team. At the end of one complete inning the score was tied at 6-6. Atwood having next bat got three runs. Brussels turn at bat scored four runs. The score was Brussels 10, Atwood 9. Third inning Brussels had a double play, which sure worried Atwood. At the end of this inning Brussels was leading 12-9. Butterflies, I think all the players, coaches and even parents had. The fourth inning was Atwood as they scored nine runs while Brussels scored four. The score at the end of four innings was Atwood 18, Brussels 16. Last inning Brussels girls shut them down, three up and three out. Brussels came to bat, and scored one run with the game ending Atwood 18, Brussels 17. On behalf of the coaches, Wayne Todd and Joyce Jacklin each and everyone of the girls who partici­ pated in the tournament, should be congratulated. The girls showed great ability in playing ball and real sportsmanship. Brussels Mite girls are: Kim Mulvey, Jennifer Cayne, Stacey Hahn, Sarah McArter, Janice Jacklin, Tanya Smith, Amber Ruttan, Shannon Conley, Holly Mitchell, Lanette Todd, Lisa Coyne, Becky Davidson. Absent from the tournament were Pattie Harrison, Lesley Stret­ ton and John Harrison, the season pitcher. Brussels Bantam boys scored one run in the top of the seventh and final inning then held off Kitchener to score a 3-2 win and capture the Walton Bantam soft- ball tournament Saturday. Chesley wins tournament The 17th Annual Fastball Tour­ nament was held on the holiday weekend as the Intermediate Tigers took it over when it appeared that no one else was going to sponsor it. The tournament opened on Friday night with Walton Brewers defeating Goderich Jrs. 13 - 0 and the Belmore Stingers edging the Brussels Tigers 4 - 3. On Saturday morning Rostock Royals edged Belmore Jrs. 2-1; the Chepstow Aces were beaten 5-4 by Ingersoll Merchants; Fullarton A’s defeated Kitchener Pro-tel 9-4; Clifford 4 Aces won a bye when Mississauga couldn’t make it with the Wingham Midgets filling in for them for the remainder of the tournament. After a rain delay Chesley Texacos defeated Camlachie Jrs. 4-0; Bluevale Cougars edged Owen Sound Jrs. 3-2. In Consolation round Brussels defeated Goderich 5-2 and on the Championship side Belmore slipp­ ed past Walton 3-2. In Consolation play on Sunday it was Chepstow 7 - Belmore Jrs. 0; Wingham 3 - Kitchener 2; and Camlachie Jr’s. 4 - Owen Sound 2. On the Championship side Rostock defeated Ingersoll; Clif­ ford 6 - Fullarton 2; Chesley 4 - Bluevale 1. Monday morning at 11 a.m. had Chepstow defeating the Brussels Tigers 5 - 1 which put them in the consolation final against Camla­ chie Jrs. who had defeated Wing­ ham 9 - 2. Chepstow defeated Camlachie 3-0toclaimthe Conslation title and pickup a $300 cheque with Cam­ lachie receiving a $150 cheque. On the championship side Bel­ more defeated Rostock 4-1 and Chesley defeated Clifford 4 Aces 4 - 0 setting the stage for the championship final. It was excel­ lentchampionship ball as the score was tied at 3-3 and extra innings had the Chesley Texaco’s come through to claim a 4-3 victory. Chesley waspresented with a $700 cheque for their efforts while Belmore received $300 as the runners-up. Forte each striking out 14 batters. Brussels had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning then scored another in the sixth. But Kitchener tied the game in the sixth with two runs to set up Brussels’ exciting finish. In the “B“ championship, Rip­ ley romped over Waterloo 11-1. After scoring one in the first inning, Ripley blew the game open with five in the second and four in the fourth before adding one in the sixth. Waterloo managed its only run in the fourth. Ripley’s Kevin Galoway struck out three in leading his team. Teams from Ripley, Waterloo, Mitchell, Monkton, Walton, Kitchener, Milverton and Brussels took part in the tournament sponsored by the Walton Area Sports Club. Brussels had advanced to the “A” final after defeating Mitchell 4-1 while Kitchener had edged Walton 3-1. Ripley defeated Mil­ verton 9-5 while Waterloo had beaten Monkton 8-0 to win berths in the “B“ finals.
