Vandals knock anti-trade signs THE EDITOR, An interesting footnote to Mr. Mulroney’s visit to our area yesterday (Thursday) was what happened at the end of my lane last night. Some weeks ago I put up a sign which says on one side * ‘CANADA - Don’t trade it away” and on the other “Let Canadians Decide”. It expresses my concerns about the Mulroney Trade Deal and my belief that Canadians should have a chance to vote on the issue. The sign stood peacefully at the end of my lane until last night when some enterprising person, per haps emboldened by Mr. Mul roney’s visit, got up the courage to pull it up, tear it to bits and smash the stake against our mail box. The symbolism of this act of anonymous violence was too great to let pass. Mr. Crosbie is forever talking about the “irrationality” of those who disagree with the Mulroney Trade Deal. Unfortu nately it appears that those who support it will resort to violent intimidation. They are prepared to tear up and trample the request that ordinary Canadians have a vote on a deal that will profoundly effect our country. In the process they are prepared to damage Canadian institutions, in this case symbolized by my smashed mail- The individual must decide box. 1 am not amused or intimidated. Canada is a country worth fighting for. Politicians who lie about their true intentions before elections, like cowards who anonymously smash signs and mailboxes, can not be respected. Neither should they be feared. I hope what happened at the end of my lane is not an example of how supporters of the Mulroney Trade Deal intend to behave during the election. If they do stoop to intimidation they will be surprised to find that ordinary Canadians are looking for honesty and integrity, not violence. We can choose to be either good or bad. The decision is ours. The judgment is God’s. Each individual has to answer for his or her own deeds. If you can’t live with having terminated the life of your own child, that knowledge will haunt you the rest of your life. If you can live with killing an unborn, your feelings are dulled to below that of an animal. Even a bird defends the eggs that are being incubated. In both cases you are to be pitied. Also to be pitied are those who do not believe there is a God for, if that were the case, life would have no purpose and their reasoning then would make sense in a material or selfish way. We have to build a morally responsible society with the lead ers giving the example if we are to succeed in freeing ourselves from the evil of abortion, divorce, AIDS and other signs of our decaying way of “modern” life.
