a plaque on the new wharf to mark
the occasion, after both of them, as
well as Goderich mayor Eileen
Palmer, had stressed how much
the new facility will mean not only
to Goderich and to Huron County,
but to neighbouring counties as
well, in terms of job creation and
economic growth.
The prime minister stressed the
part that Mr. Cardiff had played in
obtaining federal funding for the
multi-million dollar project, insist
ing that it was largely due to the
local MP’s persistence that the
money came through.
“I want to pay special tribute to
my friend Murray Cardiff - a most
impressive and effective Member
of Parliament, whose advocacy and
determination and resolve are
principally responsible for this
great achievement,” Mr. Mul
roney said as the crowd applauded.
At the conclusion of the official
program at the harbour, Mr.
Mulroney and hiswife, Mila, spent
time shaking handsand signing
hundreds of autographs as the
crowd surged about them, then
proceeded to the Huron County
Museum where they officially
opened the new military exhibit
before being guided on a whirlwind
tour of the facility which is
currently undergoing renovations.
The Mulroneys were accompan
ied throughout their stay in
Goderich by their four children,
Caroline, Benedict, Mark and
Nicholas, who delighted the crowd
at the museum with their obvious
enjoyment of several of the
exhibits. Mark, especially, enjoy
ed several of the Agriculture Hall
displays, playing with one of them
with great enthusiasm before
being hustled away.
To conclude the events of the
day, the Mulroney family and a
large crowd of well-wishers return
ed to the Goderich Airport where
they mingled freely at an informal
luncheon hosted by Mr. Cardiff
and his wife, Betty.
