Charlene Stephenson wins scholarship Brussels Legion Pipe Band Drum Major Tom MacFarlane had the honour of leading a combined Brussels-Clinton Pipe Band which entertained the crowd at the Goderich docks while they waited for a visit from Prime Minister Brian Mulroney last Thursday. It was the first time most of the band members had performed before their nation’s chief executive officer. Brussels People Compiled by Marilyn Higgins Call887-6754 Gary, Joan and Christopher Ritchie, Markham and Dave, Angela, Jeffery and Kevin Hue- ther, Brampton spent the holiday weekend at their home here. There will be no more local programs on the local cable TV station Channel 17 until further notice. Mrs. Winona Martin has return ed from a 23-day tour via London to eight European countries and Asia Minor. Owing to an air strike all plane departures and arrivals were late. There were two parallel buses with 35 persons aboard on each travelling together. Arriving in Munich, Germany the group tra velled through Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey in Europe and Asia Minor, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and again Austria and Germany. It was eventful and interesting to see the different cultures of each country; the methods of farming mechaniz ed or ancient, oil wells, mines, factories, religions, old 15th cen tury buildings, cathedrals and monasteries, forts, even peasant wagons, drawn with horses or oxen and water buffalo. One evening 60 percent of the group was poisoned with contaminated food. The cure for this and dy sentry was to eat rice only. The weather was extremely warm, so warm in Greece, 114 degrees F., that the Acropolis was closed on account of several deaths there a few days previous. The mountain and valley scen ery was exotically beautiful with “thousands” of acres of grain, vegetables, golden sunflowers and fields of only cattle or sheep etc. The communist countries had some community farming with many men and women working together in large groups. This system goes on for five to seven years. In Romania the people have not tasted meat for six months or more. The highways travelled were excellent, but some countries had only one with the rural areas having only dirt roads. There is no speed limit but the bus drivers were fined three times. The group had cruises on the blue Danube and the Strait of Bosphorus. There were nine or 10 optional tours and cruises that were rather costly. In some cities where the evening meal was not provided, group members went out to clubs which put on a show of gypsy music, belly dancing, and opera with wonderful music but we couldn’t understand the words in the solos, duets, etc. The border crossings were very thorough on both leaving one country and entering the next country. Sev eral places the people in cars had to put every item on large tables to be examined. The buses opened their storage doors to see no one was under the luggage, and even mirrors looked under the bus. Soldiers with guns on their shoul ders were everywhere. All in all, it was a very educative trip seeing how other people lived and survived. ,cios. CONTEST It’s easy to play and fun to win!
