Riders show their stuff The4-HHorseClub Interclub show held July 13 in Dungannon was a lot of fun for everybody involved - even if it did turn out that the goat, who had volunteered her services for the Goat-Tying con test, chickened out because of the heat. Seventeen members from three of Huron County’s four 4-H Horse Clubs took part in the show, with the South Huron Horse Club placing first in overall points at the end of the day, followed very closely by the Brussels Club, with the Central Huron Horse Club in third place. In the Senior Division, Lee Hope of the South Huron Club placed first in overall points, with Amy Workman of the Brussels Club second and Marie DeBruyn of The life of the coach The editor, Now that ball season is winding down and hints of play-offs are in theair, itmay be time to remind some people just what a coach is! A coach is usually a very busy personwhowillstillfind time to give up not just time for two or three games each week but also to attend a practice while we, the parents, give a sigh of relief that we don ’ t have to sit at the park another night. He/she is usually a prominent person in the area who has to make sure that every player gets equal time or face an irate parent. Not an easy task. A Coach is expected to “keep his cool’’ when 10 - 12 children are yelling at him/her “Where do I play?’’ or “Can I catch now, it’s more fun.” When the weather is hot and humid and parents are tired and cranky, the Coach is still expected to keep his cool and not lose his/her temper. South Huron third. In the Junior Division, Jennifer Heckman and Karl Verbeek, both of the South Huron Club, placed first and second respectively; and in the Novice Division, Jennifer Sadler, South Huron, was first; Naomi Kelly of the Brussels Club was second; andCherylCampbellof Brussels and Allison Jacques of South Huron tied for third. Showmanship and equitation classes took place at the Dungann on Fairgrounds in the morning, followed by a bag lunch and lots of cold pop. In the afternoon, teams of two members each took part in a sack race and then in a “Tack-up” race, while the Club leaders finished off the day with a hilarious “Smooth Riding” race which saw leader Dale Marshall of the South Huron Club emerge as the winner. I also forgot to mention booking the part, finding umpires and attending all the meetings prior to the season opener. This person must also attend all the games, not just home games. Oh yes, the registration must be paid on time, or is that not the parents’ responsibility. Sound a bit like Superman? We all know that can’t be possible so take into consideration the fact that above all, a Coach is only human. Due to the loss of one Coach who has given us a lot of his time during the past few years, it’s time for the parents in the bleachers who said or thought “Iflwas coaching, I wouldn’tdothat”, tocome outand show us what you would do. This is something to keep in mind for the upcoming hockey season. We know, we’ve been there. Neil and Joan Beuermann Brussels.
