The Walton Ladies Slo Pitch Tournamentwas held on Friday night and Saturday, July 8, 9. Hot humid weather was endured, not enjoyed by all. Eight teams participated in the tournament. Three games were played Friday night with the Goderich Night Owls defeating Brodhagen Bombers 16-11, the Goderich Old Timers defeating the Wellesley Emeralds 13-6 and the Atwood Mama’s defeating Doug’s Sports, Goderich by another close score of 13-9. In the final game of first round action played Saturday morning at 9a.m. were the Seaforth Swingers defeating the Monkton Wildcats in extra innings 19-18. In the second round action the Wellesley Emer­ alds defeated Brodhagen Bombers 9-8 in the second extra inning game of the day, to advance to the B final. In the third extra inning game of the day, the Goderich Night Owls defeated the rival Goderich Old Timers by a score of 9-8 to advance to the ‘A’ Final. The next semi-final game saw Monkton Wildcats “mercy” the Doug’s Sports, Goderich team to advance to the ‘ B ’ final by a score of 18-6. In the last semi-final game saw the Seaforth Swingers defeat the Atwood Mama’s by a close score of 16-13. The “ B ” Fi nal game was played at 4:30 matching the Monkton Wildcats against the Wellesley Emeralds. After five innings the lead had changed hands each inning until the sixth inning when Monkton scored four runs to go ahead and then wrapped up the game with 11 runs in the seventh inning for a decisive win of 22-9 over Wellesley. The “A” Final was an equally exciting game as the lead changed every inning and after seven complete innings was tied 15-15. Seaforth Swingers scored one run in the top of the eighth and the Goderich Night Owls came back to score one run in the bottom of the eighth. The top of the ninth saw Seaforth score two more runs and manage to hold Goderich to no runs in the bottom of the ninth. Seaforth Swingers defeated the Goderich Night Owls by a score of 18-16 in a very close and exciting game. Many good ball games were enjoyed by all although spectators were few because of the heat. The Walton Ladies Slo-Pitch team appreciates all those who did attendandespecially the teams and umpires who endured the heat to make another successful tourn­ ament. The Walton Area Sports Club sold 50/50 tickets at the weekend tournament and the winner of the draw was Mrs. Jean Workman of Brussels. Howard and Audrey Hackwell spent a few days holidaying at Lions Head. Patricia Hackwell, Toronto was home for the weekend and attended the Ryan - Hum­ phries wedding. Allan and Alice Searle have returned home from a motor trip to the East Coast. Ken and Leona McDonald motored to the west coast where they visited with relatives en route. Michael and Kendra, grandchild­ ren from Alberta, returned home with them last week for a holiday. Several friends and relatives attended the Ryan - Humphries wedding in the Duff’s United Church Saturday and the reception at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre later. Annie Reid and Ruth Thamer were Monday evening supper guests with Isabelle Shortreed, prior to Annie meeting the Mach- an’s from Sarnia in Blyth to attend the Festival play. Barry and Olene MacLeod, Kitchener spentthe weekend at their home in the village. Gerald and Berva Watson and Mary Bernard and Christopher spent the weekend in Toronto where they attended the christen­ ing on Sunday of the daughter of Sal and Ann Curreri (nee Watson) of Richmond Hill. Sports club plans tournaments The Walton Area Sports Club held their monthly meeting July 5. Upcoming tournaments were dis­ cussed. The Bantam tournament is scheduled for Aug. 5-6-7 and the Squirts - Aug. 12-13. Plans for the barbecue for Aug. 19 to be discussed at the next meeting Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. at the library. The club will be selling 50/50 draw tickets at each of the tournaments.
