Blyth Inn went on to win the game 18-7 and wound up with the consolation title Sunday with a 13-5 win over Burkholders, also of Blyth. Molesworth wins tournament THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 1988. Sports Brussels Bantams win consolation title Molesworth defeated Munroe 13-5 Sunday afternoon towrap up a successfulfour-day 2nd Annual Hullett Township Recreation Men’s Slo-Pitch Tournament. In the consolation title game, Blyth Inn finished off their tourn­ ament in sensational style with a game-ending triple play to com­ plete a 13-5 win over Burkholders, also of the Blyth league. Twelve teams took part in the tournament that involved a round­ robin between the three teams in Wingham hosts 'Sportsfest 88' This year the Lake Huron Zone Recreation Association’s “Sports­ fest” will be hosted by the town of Wingham, August 19, 20, and 21, 1988. “Sportsfest” is a weekend festival of sports and recreational activities for people of all ages, groups and interests. The events are designed to promote fun, fellowship and good sportsman­ ship, with the emphasis on partici­ pation rather than competition. It is anticipated that almost 3,000 people will be participating in over 25 different events, - water polo, outdoor badminton, bridge, swimming, lawn darts, lawn bowl­ ing, skeet shooting, basketball, t-ball, shoot, a canoe-portage race, trail riding, two-ball golf, coed thjge-pitch baseball, ball hockey, each of four divisions followed by a playoff of the first place teams for the gold medal and a playoff of the second place teams for the consola­ tion title. Blyth Inn started off the tourna­ ment losing 13-9 to Goderich but went undefeated the rest of the way. They beat Londesboro Lasers 18-7 to make it to the playoffs, then beat Clinton Cardinals to gain the consolation final. Burkholders beat Titans 14-6 in theirfirst game but lost to Munroe, tennis, nature walks, orienteering, horseshoes, skateboarding, flag football, darts, radio operated cars, soccer, outdoor volleyball, crokinole, chess, checkers, and shuffleboard. For those who are a little hesitant to participate in a new sport or leisure activity, many of the events offered during this weekend will include introductory sessions. These sessions are designed to help ease people into enjoying a new sport. All paticipants who register for any of the events will receive a recreation-oriented gift in acknow­ ledgement of their efforts to help make Sportsfest a weekend of fun, fellowship and good sportsman­ ship. Plenty of opportunities will exist for people to discuss the day’s events with team members or new found friends at the seniors, adult, teen or pre-teen dances; over a cup of coffee and a delicious pancake breakfast; or by an evening campfire at the Sportsfest camp­ ground. The registration deadline to participate in this fun-filled week­ end is July 14. A strong defence combined with good pitching helped Brussels beat Wingham 14-5 for the consolation championship at the Goderich Bantam Softball Tournament June 26. There were eight teams in the tour name nt which was a round­ robin, two-day event for the first round. Brussels broke their opening game of the tournament wide open with 10 runs in the first inning on the way to an 18 - 2 win over Atwood. They went on to score twice in the second, four times in the third and two in the fourth in the five-inning game. Andrew McCut­ cheon and Greg Wheeler combin­ ed for eight strikeoutsfor Brussels. In their second game of the day Brussels bats went cold with men in scoring position as they left eight runners on base dropping a 6-0 game to Goderich which went on to the tournament final undefeated. Shawn Talbot recorded six strike­ outs for the winners while Scott Johnston and Andrew McCut­ Blyth Bantam girls edge Seaforth 4-3 Blyth Bantam girls ran their record to three wins and one loss when they edged Seaforth 4-3 in a tight Tri-county Bantam Girls Softball game in Seaforth June 29. Kim Medd struck out five Seaforth batters while walking only two to lead the victory. She also contributed the game’s only homerun in the third inning to bring Blyth back from an early deficit. She went two for two at the plate while Julie Bromley went two for three. Needing a win to gain the consolation finals Brussels scored three times in the fourth and hung on for a 3-1 win over Monkton late on day one of the tournament. Andrew McCutcheon, Dan Beuer- mann, and Shawn Jacklin scored the runs and Andrew McCutcheon made them stand up going the distance over seven innings and striking out 13. Andrew was at it again Sunday as he recorded 10 strikeouts in going the distance as Brussels defeated Wingham. The game was played under windy conditions that gave the Wingham fielders more problems than the Brussels play­ ers. Brussels scored twoin the first to tie the game, then took the lead for good in the second with four runs and padded the lead with five in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Andrew McCutcheon blanked Wingham through the last three innings to help Brussels to a comfortable win. Seaforth but also walked five. Seaforth started off with a bang getting a triple on the first at bat and scoring once in the opening inning. Blyth tied the score in the top of the second but Seaforth took the lead again in the bottom of the inning. Then Kim Medd's home run helped the team take its first lead 3-2. Blyth added another run in the fifth but Seaforth drew closer in thesixthwitha run. But Kim Medd set down Seaforth 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win.
