Clinton Hospital's surplus up for 1987 An operating surplus of $136,635 in 1987, up from $90,244 in 1986 was reported when the Clinton Public Hospital held its annual meeting June 20. The surplus was one more bit of evidence of the good news for the hospital that caused administrator Dan Steyntosay “...all I can see is brightness.” Bill Hearn, outgoing chairman of the hospital ’ s board of governors also pointed out that this past year the hospital had achieved the ultimate goal of a three-year accreditation status. To accom plish this when the addition of the obstetrical wing was disrupting the lives of staff members and patients alikeseemedlike an impossible task, he said. “This represents an immense amount of extra effort on the part of the hospital staff, medical staff and administration, ’ ’ he said. He pointed out it was only a few short years ago government offi cials wanted to close the hospital. Don Symons, chairman of the fundraising committee for the obstetrical wing said people in the area had been most generous. ‘ ‘The co-operation and assistance given towards this project made it a most rewarding and enjoyable experience, and I appreciate the opportunity of having some small part in this project which means so much to our community.” There were increases across the board on the expenditure side of the financial statement. The fi gures read: nursing salaries $1,699,691 ($1,650,142); general services $865,964 ($781,287); tech nical salaries $556,970 ($510,294); drugs, medical and surgical sup plies $387,553 ($371,267). Administration costs were $327,833 ($306,495); plant opera tion and maintenance $344,312 ($315,254); depreciation of equip ment $73,943 ($73,320); deprecia tion of building $60,485 ($55,226). On the revenue side of the statement, the figures were as follows: Ministry of Health $4,188,770 ($3,913,888); in patient services $160,590 ($145,475); out-patient services $30,970 ($34,182); interest $35,042 ($31,181); recoveries dietary $8,429 ($8,707); recoveries other $741 ($747). There were a mixture of increas es and decreases in the different areas of the activity statistics. Overall, the total patient days were down by 764 in 1987-88 to 12,984, compared to 13,658 in 1986-87. Included among these in patientstatistics, with the 1986-87 figuresinbrackets, were: acute care admissions 1,373 (1,419); newborn admissions 145 (134); long term admissions 26 (26); acute care patient days 8,632 (9,337); newborn patient days 597 (592); long term care patient days 3,665 (3,729). The average length of stay was down in two areas as the figure for acute care patients was 6.3 in 1987-88, and 6.5 in 1986-87, and for overall length of stay the previous figure was 9.2, compared to 8.7 in 1987-88. The one area to see an increase was long term care patients. In 1986-87 the total was 116.2, compared to 130.9 for 1987-88. Deaths in the hospital were down 19, from 64 in 1986-87, to 45 intherecentreport. Operations were up by 101, from 804 to 905. Under the heading of out patients, 11,756 (11,381) total patients were treated, and 2,429 (2,473) special clinic visits were recorded. W.
