Blyth Festival names communications director The "Soap Opera", with all its intrigue and melodrama provides a theme for this year’s Blyth Festival Youth Workshops. The script is written by playwright Colleen Curran - whose plays include several Blyth Festival comedy hits - “Cake-Walk", "Miss Balmoral OfThe Bayview’’, and "Moose County”. The Soap Opera is titled ‘Dinsley, The Soap Opera - Not The Street". The Workshops will run Monday, July 11 to Saturday, August 13, the age level is 13 to 20 years. Youth Workshop Co-ordinator Ron Gabriel sees this production (written in four segments - one performed each week) as an opportunity for the Youth Work­ shops to have their own theatre company, they will act as stage technicians, setdesigners, publici­ ty people and performers. The Young Company will have access to the expertise of the profession­ als working in the Blyth Festival company and can ask them ques­ tions and get advice. There will be three different directors for the four episodes, the first two Ron Gabriel will direct, Peter Smith will directthe third and the final episode will be directed by Hilary Blackmore. The Mail Order Bride was originally commissioned by the CBC as three five-minute dramas, according to author Robert Clin­ ton, and the present play has taken three years to develop from an idea first conceived in 1973. In its present form, it should easily be oneof the best on the Festival’s repertoire this season. Bride is directed by Katherine Kaszaz, with original music by John Roby, set design by William Chesney, costume design by Kerry Hackett, and lighting design by Harry Frehner. It opened June 22 and runs for three more matinees and 13 more evening performances, closing with a matinee on August 20. Co-ordinator Ron believes this sequential aspect of the segments will build up an audi­ ence, who will choose their favour­ ite characters and anxiously antici­ pate the plot twists and turns (just like Dallas and Dynasty!) The Youth Workshop partici­ pants will also have the opportuni­ ty to work with Theatre Instructor Mimi Mekler, whose extensive theatre training experience in­ cludes work at Universities and Secondary Schools throughout Ontario. Mimi will be working with the Young Company members mornings of the first week and part way through the second week, devloping acting skills and doing character work. The Children’s Workshops are co-ordinated this year by Allison Dunn of Bayfield. Allison has planned two exciting, fun-filled weeks planned for the two groups of younger children, 5-to-8 year olds and 9-to-12 year olds. The younger group meets mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and the older group meets afternoons 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Allison has arranged a variety of activities including a day with puppeteer Marian Doucette, fol­ lowed by a puppet show the kids will create themselves. The child­ ren will also have a chance to tour the theatre and backstage where the technicians will answer ques­ tions.
