Wendy Bachert takes 3 awards at graduation Wendy Bachert of RR 1, Walton has won three of the awards presented to graduating students at Seaforth Public School, includ- ing one of the two top academic awards. M iss Bachert shared the top award, the J.W. Talbot Merit Awardwith Jason Beuttenmiller of Grey Central students share grad awards A number of Grade 8 graduates at Grey Central Public School shared in the awards presented at the school’s banquet and gradua­ tion ceremony in the school gymnasium last Thursday even­ ing. Grant Martin was the recipient of the School Crest, presented by principal Rick Whiteley in recogni­ tion of his overall contribution to the school; Grant was also the winner of the Outstanding Scholar (Male) Award, presented by Agnes Proulx, on behalf of the Grey Central Parents' Association. Mrs. Proulx also presented the Outstanding Scholar Award (Fe­ male) to Katie Rowbotham. Gerrit VanKeulen, on behalf of the Brussels Lions Club, presented Stacey Boyd with the Lions’ Award for General Proficiency, and Jenni­ fer Brown with the Lions' Award for Congeniality. Mr. Whiteley presented Lyall Winger with the trophy as the Outstanding Male Athlete of 1987- 88; the corresponding female winner, Marjorie McGuigan, was unable to be present. Seaforth, the class valedictorian, at the school’s Grade 8 Graduation and Awards Presentation last Thursday afternoon. Presented by school trustee Graeme Craig, the Talbot Award recognizes both academic achievement and the outstanding contribution that its winners have made to their school. In addition, Miss Bachert was one of two winners of the June Boussey Public Speaking Awards, presented by former teacher Mrs. Boussey; she wasalsothe recipient of the Family Studies Award, which recognizes the highest achievement in that course. Eric Johnston of RR 2, Seaforth was the other winner of the June Boussey Award; while Doug Campbell of Winthrop and Brenda Jessome of Seaforth shared the John Jew Citizenship Award, which recognizes social responsi- ility and community involvement, aswellasgood citizenship in its recipients. The Edna Bell English Award, which recognizes the two most improved students in language arts, was shared by Mark Webb and Steven Greidanus, both of Seaforth. The 51 Grade 8 graduates were led into the school gymnasium by John Jewitt playing three proces- sional selections on the bagpipes, then Principal Gary Jewitt gave the welcoming remarks. Huron Coun­ ty’s director of education, Bob Allen, spoke briefly, followed by guest speaker Tom Lemon, who was introduced by Wendy Bachert. Kalen Carroll moved an expres­ sion of thanks, and graduation diplomas were presented by Grade 8 teachers Sheila Morton and C. Elliott. To conclude the program, Piper Jewitt again led the students in a processional to the school court­ yard, where a reception was held for the graduates, their families and friends. The members will return on July 12. These lucky members are Cheryl Darlow, RR 4, Wingham; Jennifer Procter, RR 5, Brussels; Carol Hopper, RR 5, Brussels; Steven Beane, RR 1, Brucefield; Rob Damen, RR 3, Lucan; Laura Hallahan, RR 3, Blyth; Gerald Knight, RR 3, Brussels; Murray Needham, RR5, Kincardine; Steven Rintoul, RR 2, Lucknow; andMichelleTurner, RR 1, Varna. Their escort is Lawrence Beane from RR 1, Brucefield. The members will host an exchange memberfrom Brackenfrom July 19 ‘til July 27. This exchange is being funded by the Canadian 4-H Council, Department of Secretary of State, Friends of 4-H Huron County, and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
