The 40 dozen fake cookies include 6 dozen oatmeal raisin, three dozen melting-moments, three dozen matrimony squares, and 24 dozen of the stars of the show - the famous crunchy-on-the- outside, chewy-on-the-inside rigglevake cookies. The edible cookies are the 20 dozen real rigglevake cookies. What happens to all these cookies over the course of a performance? The cookies get eaten, crushed and used in a spell. They stock the shelves of a store called ‘The Doily Cart’ - and some of them get shipped off to New York for testing. In the great Blyth Festival tradition, all the cookies are home-made - even the fake ones! The recipes for the edible cookies come from old-order Mennonite recipes collected in Edna Stae bler’s book, “Food That Really Schmecks’’, and are being made by members of the Friends Of Blyth, the theatre’s special volun teers. So far Deborah Ratelle, Properties Master has enlisted the culinary experience of local resi dents Evalena Webster and Beth Fulton. The cookies are prepared in advance and will be frozen, thawed and ‘fresh’ for every performance. One of the biggest problems may be getting the cookies on stage without ‘samples’ disappearing. Other food starring in the show includes green beans, which are ‘schnippled’ by a cusinart and potatoes which are peeled - the old-fashioned way. ♦♦♦♦♦ INEDIBLE COOKIE RECIPE Here is Claire Powers’ (Proper ties Assistant and more recently Cookie Sculptress) recipe for Rigglevake Cookies Imposters: 4 parts flour 1 part salt 1 tsp. of alum - preservative 1 1/2 cup water Mix well, split dough in two parts, make one part dark with molasses (or some sort of colour ing), then roll out both parts to 1 /8 of an inch thickness. Put the dark on the light and ‘roll up like a jelly roll’, then slice thinly. Bake them at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours. Do not eat! From your loving brewmakers!
