DON’T MOE officials get earful from councillors Three representatives of the Ontario Ministry of the Environ ment visited the June 2 meeting of Huron County Council to inform council of the procedure the county’s waste management mas ter plan will go through. They ended up listening to councillors complaints however, almost as much as they talked. Dan Shatil, of the ministry’s Environmental Assessment divi sion had completed a long pre amble about the assessment pro cess including a compliment to the county on having hired one of the best planners in the province (Dr. Gary Davidson) who helped look after the environment, when Hay Reeve Lionel Wilder got up to say that his ministry should be doing more to help reduce garbage rather than worrying about paperwork. “On his farm they used containers made of degradable plastics, he said. “We have ways and means today to design containers that dissolve,’’he said. “They’re made out of corn and we ’ ve got corn up to our chins. This study (the Waste Management Master Plan) is ridiculous. We all know we have garbage. There’s not a thing in here about reducing garbage.’’ Mr. Shatil agreed saying it takes a long time for people to change their attitudes to caring about their environment. Robert Fisher, Reeve of Zurich said bluntly that “the more of you guys we get rid of, the sooner we can solve the problem.’’ Gerry Prout, Reeve of Usborne, said the problem was the ministry didn’t use common sense. The ministry should be doing some thing that is realistic, he said. “You people in Toronto should know what needs to be done without us having tospend so much money for this study,” he said. At last report the cost of the Waste Management Master Plan study was approaching $300,000. QUALITY USED CARS & TRUCKS 1986 Regency “98”.
