Belgrave UCW hears about Friendship House The general meeting of the Belgrave U.C.W. met on May 26. The president Mrs. Ross Higgins opened the meeting and everyone joined in singing the song, “The Circle of Love’’. Mrs. Norman Cook introduced the guest speaker, June Taylor, general manager of the Survival Through Friendship House in Goderich. She spoke on wife abuse and said that at most times, there are from 13 to 15 women taking refuge at Friendship House. Many of them have children with them. This house is owned by the Anglican Church and rented to the organization for one dollar a year. There is a staff of seven at the house and the expenses are subsidized up to 80 per cent by the Government. They obtain the other 20 per cent by fund-raising drives. They depend a great deal on volunteer help and donations from church groups. The Belgrave U.C.W. had gathered a good supply of articles for her to take back for use at the house. Mrs. Leslie Shaw thanked the speaker. Patrick Cull played a piano solo. Mrs Ross Higgins conducted the business meeting. An invitation to meet with Calvin-Brick U.C.W. on June 15 was accepted. A campsite experience will be held June 14 at Camp Bimini. The Country Fayre will be held on June 25. Mrs. Ross Anderson and Mrs. Glenn Coultes conducted a wor­ ship service with the theme “Life is a Partnership’’. A social time with tea and cookies was enjoyed following the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Wightman attended the wedding of their granddaughter Anne Montgomery to Randy Prange at the Westmin­ ster St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Guelph. People Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Dowse of Cambridge (Galt) visited on Fri­ day, June 3 with their cousins Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Moy, Craig and Sara of Mississauga spent the weekend with her mother Mrs. Sarah Anderson. On Saturday, June 4, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. George Michie attended the Open House in honour of the 50th wedding anniversary of their cousins Mr. and Mrs. Harold Coulson at Milton. Mr. Bert Johnston is a patient in the Alexandra and Marine Hospi­ tal, Goderich. Seniors housing explored A meeting of 12 interested citizens of the Belgrave community took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Michie lastweek. The discussion centred around the need for Senior Citizen housing in Belgrave. It was decided to hold a public meeting in the near future.
