Woodstock Gumbys win Optimists' tournament While there have been many dedicated hockey fans who have contributed stories on their teams over the years to fill The Citizen’s sports pages, getting coverage of ball during the summer has been much more difficult. The last two summers we have had virtually no regular reports on the activities of the dozens of ball teams in the area. Jason won this heat of the race. the situation The Citizen has designed a form which can be easily filled in by scorekeepers or fans with each team. The Citizen staff will write accounts of the game based on the information on the form. The forms are available at The Citizen’s offices in either Brussels or Blyth. Forms should be returned as soon as possible after the game but by Monday noon at latest. first game Blyth Bantam Girls won their first game of schedule by defeating Monkton 18-10. Pitching duties were shared by Kim Medd, Tammi Medd, and Cathy MacDonald. Jennifer Allan was 5 for 5 at the plate. Kim Medd, Lori Wharton, and Tammi Medd went 4 for 4. The girls’ next game is in Winthrop on June 15 at 8 p.m. Then on June 17 Seaforth comes to Blyth for a 7 o’clock game. Woodstock Gumbys won the ninth annual Brussels Optimist Slo-pitch tournament on Sunday scoring a convincing 5-3 win over Atwood Raiders. The Gumbys, who also won the tournamentlastyear, struckfor one run in the second,one in the third and five in the fourth to take a commanding lead. Atwood staged a rally in the bottom of the seventh (and final) inning to score three runs but came up short leaving two men on base. Woodstock reached the finals by defeating Brampton Rosetown Inn 9-0 in the first round. Harriston 18-0 in the second and beating Atwood Lasers in the semi-finals. Atwood Raiders defeated Monkton Vultures 15-1 then beat Londes- boro Warriors and the Mitchell Red Caps to gain the final. In the consolation final, Monk­ ton Powerline came from behind with two runs in the sixth inning CHSS students perform at OFSSA Last Friday and Saturday, Lisa Beattie, Vivienne Stephens and Nicole Garon represented Central HuronattheO.F.S.A.A. Track and Field Championships held at Eto­ bicoke Centennial Stadium this year. Each event is contested, at that level, by the four best athletes from each of the sixO.F.S.A.A. regions. Nicole Garon had an outstanding day in the Midget Girls Discus event. Each time out Nicole has been able to improve on her personal best and this event was no exception. Nicole set a new school record at 31.94 m. in this event which bettered her previous best of last week by over four metres! This throw won the bronze medal in the event for Nicole. This medal is the first medal ever won by a Central Huron athlete in Track and Field at the O.F.S.A.A. level. Vivienne Stephens finished in 12th position in the 100 m. event with a time of 13.09 sec. Lisa Beattie, hampered somewhat by a leg injury, finished 15th in the Midget Girls long jump with a 4.61 m. jump. After losing their first round game with Wing­ ham Smokies, Monkton went on to beat Brussels Optimists and Ripley on the “B” side.
