Mr. and Mrs. Ross Anderson marks 30th anniversary The thirtieth Anniversary cele­ bration of Calvin-Brick United Church was observed on Sunday, May 29 at 11 p.m. In 1958 the congregations of Calvin Presbyterian Church and Brick United Church which had been worshipping each in their own church diagonally across the corner became one congregation. They chose as their church build­ ing the Calvin Presbyterian church spentthe holiday weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Rob Roy and Christina of Lakefield. Dr. Ray and Mrs. Nicholson of Williamburg visited with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Garner Nicholson and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Thornton on the weekend. Belgrave and area residents Assisting with the music was Mrs. Norman Coultes as organist. The congregation enjoyed many beau­ tiful familiar selections during the prelude and postlude. Pat is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Cull of RR 1, Belgrave. which was the newer building of the two. In 1958 this church became the Calvin Brick United Church. Many of its original members from that union are still active in the work of the church today. A capacity congregation cele­ brated this occasion under the leadership of their present mini­ ster, Rev. John G. Roberts. The Season shot for card players Thirteen tables of Shoot were in play in the W.I. Hall, Belgrave, May 25 to end the euchre for this season. Winners were: high lady, Mrs. Stuart Chamney; low lady, Mrs. Eva McGill; most shoots, lady. Miss Jean Wilton; high man, Jas. R. Coultes; low man, Albert Cook; most shoots, man, George John­ ston. Further notice will be given for the start of euchre for the winter months. Thanksto everyone for their support. The official opening of the new McKillop Township Public Works Centre at Winthrop was a cause for celebration last Saturday, and politicians from all levels of government were on hand for the ribbon-cutting at the $191,000 facility. Afterwards, Huron-Bruce MP Murray Cardiff presented McKillop Reeve Marie Hicknell with a new Canadian flag for the building. guest speaker for the day was Rev. J. Robert Watt of Toronto. He is a recently retired minister from Trinity and Humber Valley United Church in West Toronto. He is also an author and had copies of his most recent book, “The Heart Renewed,’’ which was written following his quintuple heart, by-pass surgery. He is well known in this area as his mother came from Lucknow and many of his relatives still live in the White­ church and Belgrave areas. He reminisced for a few minutes about the boyhood summers spent in the area. His sermon entitled “Keeping our course’ ’ was based on scripture from Ephesians 4:7-29. Christians are encouraged to keep their eyes on the goal despite the many trials that may cause them to stumble. Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. Two selections * ‘ Spirit of Gentle­ ness’’ and “I Love” were sung by the choir. The choir is composed of 16 young people from the congre­ gation and were accompanied by Mrs. George McGee on the piano. Long distance information easier after change Bell Canada customers in area codes 519 and 807 now have access to both local and long distance directory assistance within their area code by dialing 411. Until now, customers were required to dial 1-555-1212 to obtain long distance directory assistance with­ in their area code. Charges of 60 cents will continue to apply if the number requested is listed in the customer’s directory or in another directory automati­ cally provided to the customer, unless there is an exception or exemption as outlined in the front pages of the telephone directory. However, to obtain a number with a different area code, customers must continue to dial 1 + area code + 555-1212. There is no charge for calls to long distance directory assistance operators in Canada. In 1985, however, Bell Canada introduced a charge for calls placed to long distance directory assistance in the United States. A charge of 80 cents applies to each call after 250 free calls have been placed. Bell Canada’s directory assis­ tance service handles an average of 450,000 local and long distance calls a day, in Ontario and Quebec.
