Minister's Study Salvation is free BY PASTOR BOB BARNHART BLYTH, CHURCH OF GOD There is a story about a man who read an ad that said: “Rolls Royce for sale $50.” The man thought it was crazy but he went to check it. The woman showed him the car. It looked in excellent condition. He asked to drive it around the block. It ran perfectly. The man bought the car. He said, “Now that I have bought the car tell me what’s wrong withit. No one sells a Rolls Royce for $50.’’ The lady said: “Nothing is wrong with it. My husband ran away with his secretary to South America. I received a letter from him the other day. It said ‘you can have everything else just sell the Rolls and send me the money.’’ We think that if something is valuable it has to be expensive or if it is not expensive it cannot be very good. Trying to explain salvation as a free gift you often encounter the same problem. Salvation is a free gift from God. It cannot be earned or bought. Ephesians 2: 8-9 states: “For it is by Grace you have been saved, throughfaith, and this is not of yourselves it is the gift of God not by works so that no one can boast. Salvation is a free gift. There are only two things you can do with a gift. You can either accept or reject it. The acrostic explaining grace says: “God’s Riches Available at Christ’s Expense. Let’s say that we believe salva tion is free; we may be like the man with the Rolls Royce. Something must be wrong or it isn’t valuable. Jesus I believe tried to show the value of salvation in two Parables recorded in Matthew 13: 44-46. “The Kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and boughtthe field. Again the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.’’ Parables contain one main truth. I believe the main point of these two parables is; entrance into the kingdom is of such value that it is worth giving up everything to get in. I don’t believe you can buy salvation or earn it. I believe it is a gift. That is what is so amazing about salvation. It is the most valuable possession you can have yet it is the free gift of God. That doesn’t seem to fit into our society'. We have the expression “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth,’’ or “if it seems too goodtobe true it probably is.” The latter expression can prove valu able when investing money or when you are buying something. When it comes to the gospel it is not true. Salvation is a free gift and it is the most valuable and important possession you can have.
