Councillors want better handle on Hall finances
Blyth Village council represen
tatives on the Memorial Hall board
want the board to have a better
handle on revenue and expenses at
the hall so they can make the
building come closer to paying for
itself.
‘ ‘There’s no way we’re going
into black figures,” Councillor
William Manning told council at its
May 10 meeting. “There’s too
much competition (from other
facilities). We’d never rent it.”
However the hall should come
closer to paying its own way,” he
said.
Helen Grubb, clerk-treasurer
pointed out that there were more
than20eventsinthehall during
February but the rent brought in
was less than $300. Heating the
building for the month was several
times that amount.
Councillor Manning and Coun
cillor Bev Elliott, the other council
representative on the board asked
that detailed figures for all reven
ues as well as all expenses be
prepared so that the board can get a
proper idea of what the real
financial position is.
Reporting on the Blyth and
District Community Centre Board
Councillor Lloyd Sippel said the
five-year structural engineering
report from Art Clark of Maitland
Engineering, Wingham had been
“rather favourable”. While there
had been worry that rust on the
steel trusses might need to be
sandblasted off, he said, this will
notbe neededfor several years.
Wirebrushing will be enough in the
short term. The report did not look
as favourably on current main
tenance at the arena and recom
mended improvements.
Ameetinghadbeen held with
groups using the arena about
major equipment replacement
needed and the outcome had been
good, he said. The engineer is to be
asked to draw up plans for the
replacement of the condenser but if
the project goes ahead it will not be
funded by taxpayer money outside
the budget, Councillor Sippel
assured.
