The Citizen, 1988-05-25, Page 3Blyth’s Tammi Medd Is $250 richer, and has a silver medal and two first-place certificates to show after exhibiting her Science Fair project, “The effects of insecticides on soil,” at the Canada-wide Science Fair in Winnipeg last week. Sometimes these days there seem to be more messages arriving by balloon than by mail. Latest to get a long-distance communica­ tions was LeslieCaldwell, RR 3, Blyth whofound a balloon in his field last week from Chris James who had let the balloon go from First English Lutheran Church, in Peoria, Illinois. The balloon came a longway. Peoriaissouthwestof Chicago. Mrs. Ella Carter received word last Thursday that Mr. Wilmer Lush of Meaford had passed away that afternoon in Toronto hospital. Mr. Lush will be remembered by many in this district when the family lived on the farm now owned by AdrieBos. Hewas in his 80th year. He is survived by two daughters Mrs. Pearl Whitfield, Florence and her husband Donald Oliver; two sons, Ronald and his wife Linda, all of Meaford; Gerald and his wife of Galt and by several grandchildren. He was predeceas­ ed by wife Ella in September 1984 and two sons Ernie in infancy and Murray, April 1987. Burial took place in Meaford Cemetery. Mr. anc|Mrs. Carl Longman and George, accompanied by Mrs. Mary Longman of Londesboro, attended Carl’s brother, Lloyd Longman’s wedding, in Stratford at Parkview United Church on Saturday. While Blyth’s main street was quiet with the stores closed Monday for the holiday, there was a good deal of activity with all the new arrivals as the Blyth Festival began rehearsals for its first play “The Cookie War’’. Many ac­ quaintances were renewed as members of the company from past years met Blyth friends again. Our best wishes go to Sid McCullough who has been a patient in St. Joseph’s Hospital, London where he underwent sur­ gery two weeks ago. Sid is reported to be progressing favourably and is expected home later this week. Bell plans $100,000 improvements Bell Canada plans improve­ ments to the telephone system for Blyth costing $100,000 in 1988 the company said in a press release last week. Improvements include placing a trunk cable on Hwy. 4 between Blyth and Wingham to relieve congestion; placing buried cable in the Dinsley and Queen St. area of Blyth where there is a shortage of linesavailablefor business and residences toprovide more line and improve quality of service, and providing cable for the new addition to Blyth Memorial Hall. During 1987, the company says, it spent $109,000 on replacing distribution cables to relieve con­ gestion in rural areas north and east of Blyth.
