EastWawanosh damage spree results in guilty plea A Lucknow man has been charged with two counts resulting from a damage spree in East Wawanosh Township a year ago, and will appear in Wingham District Court on June 22 for sentencing. Similar charges laid against a Wingham man for the same caper have been withdrawn. Paul G. England of Lucknow appeared in Wingham Court April 27 to face charges laid by the Ontario Provincial Police in six incidents which took place over the past 14 months, while Murray George Hickey of Wingham ap peared to face two of the same charges laid against Mr. England, as well as two separate charges laid againsthimby the WinghamTown Police. Alexander Gulutzen of RR 3, Blyth also appeared in court and was remanded to July 27 for a preliminary hearing as the result of three incidents which took place last January and March. Mr. Gulutzen pleaded not guilty to one count of damaging property, one count of uttering a death threat, and one count of dangerous driving, all of which allegedly took place in Blyth. Jerry Michael Belanger of RR 1, Belgrave was sentenced to four months in jail after being found guilty of stealing a VCR and several video tapes from the home of Morris Hemingway of RR 3, Brussels last August. Taking into account Mr. Belan ger’s earlier record, Judge Hunter said that the incident at the Hemingway home was “made worse’’ by the fact that Mr. Belanger knew his victim, and knew he was not in the house at the time of the theft. Samuel Wayne McLean of Lis- towel was fined $750, ordered to pay $150 in restitution and placed on probation for two years as the result of a breaking and entering incident at the home of a Grey Township woman last August. Mr. McLean, who said he was drunk at the time of the incident, admitted taking several small tools from the porch of the home, but said he did not enter the house where the woman was sleeping, nor take $50 in cash which went missing at the same time. Robert Drager of RR 2, Listowel was placed on probation for 12 months as the result of pleading guilty to a charge of driving his car across the lawns of Grey Central Public School at Ethel last Novem ber. He produced a receipt which showed that restitution for the damage, in the amount of $210, had been paid to the Huron County Board of Education. And finally, Robert Dwight McMurran of RR 4, Brussels, was fined $100 after pleading guilty to the possession of a restricted drug, namely marijuana. Police said that two bags of the narcotic had been discovered in Mr. McMurran’s car during a routine spot check under the RIDE program, done in Turnberry Twp. March 5. C.A.M.C. - Bookkeeping - Income Tax Preparation - Experienced Staff HOURS: Wednesday-9-6 Saturdays-9-1 Alan Campbell 328 Josephine Street WINGHAM 357-3687 or 887-9451 Mr. England pleaded guilty to one charge of breaking, entering, wilful damage and theft at the East Wawanosh farm of John Rutledge ofRR 1, Belgrave on May 12,1987, during which time Mr. Rutledge’s home was broken into and “trash ed," according to a witness, while several small implements were stolen from a driving shed. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of wilful damage over $1,000 in which he and three other individuals allegedly took a pick up truck belonging to John Martin Carmichael of RR 1, Belgrave, which was parked at the time at Mr. Rutledge’s farm, driving it away at high speed and subsequently abandoning it before rolling it down an embankment on the same day as the damage to the Rutledge home allegedly occurred. Mr. Hickey, who pleaded not guilty to the same two counts as the result of being in Mr. England’s company last May 12, was let off by Judge R.G.E. Hunter last Wed nesday as the result of a courtroom trial which saw three witnesses called against him in the matter, while Mr. Hickey himself was called to the stand in his own defense. Judge Hunter threw out both charges againstMr. Hickey, large ly as the result of almost totally conflicting evidence, but he told Mr. Hickey that he found his (Mr. Hickey’s) own evidence “quite incredible.” “I’m quite suspicious,” Judge Hunter said, ‘ ‘but 1 do have to give you points for admitting you tried to sell a chain saw (allegedly stolen during the escapade)”. At the same time Mr. Hickey was sentenced to serve 15 days for creating a disturbance at Mac’s Milk in Wingham last January 9, and a further five days to be served concurrently for later failing to appear at the Wingham Police Station in the matter. The sentence will be served on weekends. Also on April 27, Mr. England pleaded guilty to other counts of breaking, entering and theft in Lucknow between March and November of 1987, as well as to one count of car theft in Lucknow last November. He will be sentenced on all six counts next month. In other items on the crowded docket at Wingham Court last week, Judge Hunter suspended passing sentence on John Martin Carmichael of RR 1, Belgrave after Mr. Carmichael pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing bodily harm.. Although Judge Hunter said the incident was a “serious offense,” he placed Mr. Carmichael on probation for 18 months, on the condition that he keep the peace and take counselling as recom mended by the probation officer.
